thats one type of shooter, then theres stuff like thing thing or madness accelerant, or do they count as brawlers, theyre the type of shooters i prefer, but retro is good i guess, i guess this is going to be the latter, retro

We should totally have an "art forum shooter" game.
Main player can be BMK. We can have a few people team together to design the level, ships and bosses.
Explanation? Let's say J-qb, SirNightOwl and I partner together. We would work together on a level design, enemies and bosses, or we could split them up. We could even have the bosses be ourselves!

If you wanted send me a level or two to design and a few enemies. I don't think I could design a good boss, but some weak ass minions, sure as hell!

Also I was thinking, if we should set this up for revenue sharing, I think we should give all the revenue to one of the charity accounts we have on the site.

this could actually look good on my port folio.

I'm going to need more Whiskey for this

How do we know if the scrolling shooter will be more zoomed out or in on the characters, have obstacles like walls , be overview or side view, and will it have power ups etc.?

Ok, so, from what you are saying, we can have a team for a level. But are we allowed to go solo, or is it teams only?

I understand the fears of us not getting our parts done, but I recently have some really bad experience with a team mate and my wounds from that haven't really healed yet. so Alone I go, if you know what I mean

Since we are going for a scrolling shooter, then we need epic boss battles at least. So I suggest we start looking for epic MUSIC for boss battles, because with years of experience, I can tell that bossbattles with awesome music & style, even if they are not that hard / challenging are the ones you will be playing over & over & over again.

Because of that, we need some epic bosses as well ;)

That's a good idea.

Also to guys not liking the idea of scrolling shooters, who's to say that other simplistic things to give the game same originality can't be implemented?
For example, how about the player has to solve a time-trialed tile puzzle to unlock certain bonuses or take easier routes?
I was fancying having fragile numerated enemies that you have to kill in a certain order (like passcode) so that people don't spray and pray.
Although I know little actionscript, I can tell it's achievable.

Dunno what the theme's gonna be, but here's an unfinished clockwork anglerfish that I'll animate.

Agreed, if you all can help brainstorm all the elements we're going to require before I come up with an official thread for this project that would be awesome.

Well before any of us get off on to the parts we want to do I Think that the theme/story is the first thing to take care of. At least so were all working on at least the same Idea

Dropping in my two cents on the theme.
First, we'll need something that would accommodate a wide variety of visual styles, from cartoonish to steampunkish. Second, some artists prefer to draw organic creatures, some like mechanical machines.
Thus, I figure a dream theme would be the best choice. Although it's somewhat lazy explanation, it makes the different styles feel more logical. Anybody heard about Psychonauts? In the game, you can enter people's minds and go around there. Maybe we could have a game where you enter different people's dreams. That way we could categorize enemies and roup them together rather than having the player face a flying fish and a helicopter at the same time.
Alternatively, crash landing on an alien planet might accommodate a wide variety of styles too, even if a bit worse than the dreams theme.

Side-scrolling shooter games.

I think as far as artwise is concerned a sideways view would allow for better art. Not to say that top down isn't good, just that it limits things by ways of originality in my opinion.

I think it would be nice to feature a mix of BOTH top down and side view, like the Konami classic Life-Force (NES). Some levels would be played in top down others from the side.

I like this idea a lot, even though I don't think most shooters, even really wacky ones (thinking Parodious here), require or provide much explination (here's your ship, now shoot everything you see).

I think that with the dream idea; each level could be done by a team of artists covering one theme and ALL the elements could reflect that from the main ship, the enemies and level elements to even the HUD. Each could reflect a different style. Anything is possible this way from a steampunk themed level to flying barn yard animals and, hell, why not a NG BBS themed level?

Story idea:

This solar system is a true spacial wonder. The massive sun in the center holds 36 planets around it and each planet due to a strange gravitational pull from unknown forces forced apart the planets making almost barrier like areas preventing any inhabitants to venture or else they might be crushed some planets however instead of being forced apart are drawn in being next to each other having technologies mingle. One cluster however was having a ravaging war with highly advanced technology that sets in motion a chain of events that destroys the gravitational barriers separating the 36 planets and making them grow closer and closer. This has allowed contact between the different races and a balanced system of government starts to form but however another chain of events makes it so the entire solar system is at WAR.

it's a basic background story that I just came up with so many strange parts to it and I haven't developed it yet this is just off of the top of me head... But this story line makes it so any person that wants choose a theme like stemepunk or whatever can and then can be assigned to a planet cluster to perfect with the rest of them like minded people and have everyone working in groups to develop each planet clusters background.

I think the story is the easiest part, the story tends to work itself out after the art has been completed anyways.

So what Im curious about is how do are you going to divvy up the assignments?

should we have a template for backgrounds, bosses and minions, and just let people have at it?

Or will everyone need to come up with their own world?

also are unpublished works allowed? I got plenty of those.

Also, as far as theme/story goes, I say we have to immediately establish the game as completely goofy and inconsistent, so people could do whatever they wanted.

I say someone just provide some templates and we get to work. We'll figure it all out later ;)
