Since Knocturne is a polysyllabic word I will vote more than once.

I want to do a platformer the most, if that ended up the case, I would love drawing the weird dark level and my boss would be this giant panda thing that looks like the Radiohead bear kinda. We could add other useable characters after the final project is done, also.

My second vote is for side-scrolling brawler, I'm imagining it looking similar to the old ones, so for the most part, animation wouldn't be too complicated. There could be the kind of premise where a mysterious entity summons heroes of other worlds/dimensions to fight eachother, then the good people would be playable and the bad people would be villains. Or we could bring the option of playing as the villains.

I think we have enough shooting & fighting games already, so...

Platformer.

Also, I think it has the best opportunity for different kinds of surreal & wild art, and even platformers can have epic boss battles if we include a little "combat" factor in it.

You can never go wrong with platformers. becuase you can techically combine the aspects of the scrolling games and apply them to the platformer.

Yeah, I think a game where you go through different dimensions (and different styles) would be cool.

Scrolling shooters seem to simplistic, and most platformers that don't have a retro vibe bothers me because the spaces where characters are feels less defined without pixels.

Scrolling brawler seems the best choice for any kind of artsy drawings, though it would be hard part for characters, there would be plenty of powerups, backgrounds and objects characters might ride or throw like in dad n me for lots of people to get in on the drawing.

you know, one category we didn't have although it is one of my personal favorites was a Tower Defense game.
it would have worked with contrasting styles pretty well. and although there are a lot of defense games on NG there are only a dozen or so that are really really good.

perhaps I should find a programmer to team up with to do this.

Thanks to big-jonny-13 for tabulating the results for me while I was being lazy. I asked him to only count the first vote for people who ignored the instructions and voted for more than one type of game.

A big thank you to everyone who voted!

Feel free to discuss the results here or in the lounge.

We're going to need a lot more things from people, not just votes! Be sure to participate in the collab. I'll be preparing a thread for the project soon. =]

Did you have someone in mind? I know a few people who are adept at ActionScript, but not many. As long as we can pool our resources we should be able to get a good coder and a good engine in place.=]

sorry if I mislead on that one,

farg, I would've voted for platformer, but that wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

technically my vote should count 3 times so maybe it may have.

As long as that shooter isn't mindlessly boring/repetitive, it could work. Less animating/spriting means you can focus a lot more on the detail. That'll show those people using old ass computers to play flash games

Hell no, it won't be boring. It'll HAVE to be enemy spam, arcade hard, and have gigantic, computer-slowing bosses shooting sixty humongous lasers out of their robotic rectums.

Ideally.

I have nothing to say that is at all relevant.
