All the government sees is state test scores. Anyone who's taken something along the lines of a Regents or DBQ state test knows how easy they are. The reason test scores are so low is because, again, a lot of kids don't care. The key is to incite interest and make the kids want to do better. Initiatives like Obama's speech to school kids (regardless of motives) are the kind of steps the government and school administration need to take to get kids passing again.

The problem lies in the media and modern television constantly bringing up the idea that school is bad and boring. Kids learn a large amount of what they believe in from television. If the government would just censor that kind of thing from being broadcast then it would make a significant difference.

We can have better education in a shorter time rather than making it longer. What's the use?

Wow, you say this without giving any explanation to your point of view? Man, maybe we should add 3 hours to the school day if we can't even teach our kids to back-up their statements. Seriously what the heck is your logic behind kids learning more in a shorter school.

Maybe school is boring sometimes. If we have longer school hours, there would be less attention paid, we don't need more school hours, maybe the parents could teach give kids some extra help.

I think its a great idea and needs the support of the public, all American kids need school as a vital part of their life; its only naturally that they should spend more time at a place where they learn about the world around them.

Most of the world around them is outside.

Like I said before, if they do that then they'll have to increase the amount of classwork. So it's basically a matter of what the schools want to do.

It really doesn't seem important to me, because I've heard of politicians bringing this idea up periodically for my entire life. The president is just one more person to suggest it.

If kids don't want to be educated, no amount of instructional hours is going to change that. It's more likely that a longer school day just makes those people less inclined to pay attention in the first place.

School doesn't need to be changed, just the attitude towards school.
But to do that we'd have to completely change what kids think of school.

In order to do that we'd have to erase everything that is anti-school and openly broadcast school as being cool. A process which could take many years.

The kids at my school, i don't know what to say for them. When they FINALLY hear about the longer school days they'd say "Bullshit fuck shit cock-sitter rape bum" and act "rebellious" thinking that everyone is laughing with them and agreements are being shared on their part and wont realize they're running their lives into an impervious brick wall covered in spikes.

I hate the majority of kids my age and hate the adults for not trying to stop them, of course i know the adults tried, failed, and gave up but the can correct that mistake with the glorious cane.

Six of the best would do this generation good.

Yes i know, I'm almost wishing the cane upon myself but I'm simply to smart to get it.

Actually, no. Hillary woulkd have most likely worked hard to make this law. Heck she started up the ESRB you don't think she'd get the idea to lengthen school days?

I don't care, because this doesn't affect me :)

Longer school isn't the solution though, there needs to be a longer school year, with more 1-2 week breaks at a time.

From the Article:
:"Ten minutes sounds trivial to a school day, but don't forget, these math periods in the U.S. average 45 minutes,"

I do 1 hour 15 minutes of Maths, 4 times a week... (Not extra classes either). I wonder how US school times compare to My school(in Australia)... Oh well, I better enjoy today, the last day of my holidays :(

Some people might think shortening summer wouldn't be such a bad idea, but I have a job; and that could be anywhere from $600 to $1200 less money a summer that could be used towards a scholarship or supporting my families income.

Better idea- Keep the same length, but have school year long.

There is no such thing as someone who doesn't like the PS3, there is only poor people who can't afford one. PS3 owners pity you and hope you can one day get out of poverty.

I personally believe this might be a good thing. Sure it's not a popular idea but it is the best idea I've seen come out of Obama so far. It's really more important for us to be well educated then to waste time having fun. However I think that 3 more hours is a bit to much. I'd have to go with 1 more hour of school. What do you think Newgrounds?

Have a longer calendar going into Summer is stupid, there are already schools which do that and some kids have no summer break, but those schools don't even score any higher on the tests, thus a bunch of wasted money. He may use Summer school as an example, but thats entirely different then stretching the calendar, Summer School is repeating classes, completely different then spending more time in them.

As for adding hours to the school day, why not.

As for his best idea? This is one of his most average idea's, he got Iran to consider dropping there nuclear weapons by getting Russia to start pressuring them since Russia is an important buddy since they refine the oil which comes out of Iran, think of it, we could do the same with North Korea using China.

i don't live in the states but from what I've heard education isn't as good as you'd expect from the most powerful country in the world. I'm sure the country can benefit from improved academic system but I simply wouldn't give the youth more of the same. However it's most likely also true that more time with students will give schools a better environment in which to educate.
