People want the most cutting edge thing at the time. Back in 1980-1985 when most of the games you listed came out, those games were cutting edge. Hell, the original Sonic and Donkey Kong looked better than stuff that came out years later.

To provide an example about how stupid your question is, what if I asked this: Why do people what GPS's in their cars? I mean, I know they are helpful but look at the 1968 Mustang, the 1936 Packard and the 1972 Charger they're masterpieces right there and they didn't have GPS's

It is. Even if the car is a good car, certain people won't drive it for the lack of GPS. Same with graphics. It may be fun as hell, but if the graphics are Wii quality, certain people stray away for something looking like Killzone 2.

Actually, they're not. If a game designer does their job right, it shouldn't matter how shiny the graphics are. Sure, it's a good to not have an ugly game, but gameplay and atmosphere should be what's important. The original Silent Hill doesn't need HD graphics to replicate the scary atmosphere or intense gameplay.

MM9 had good graphics. It aimed for a simple retro graphical style and it pulled it off really well. And it's also really fun to play.

but they're classic. back then graphics didn't have that good potential. and in those the graphics are still clear. nowdays it's just lazy not to make hd for your games. and non hd games playing to much can actually hurt your eyes because the fuzziness of it and your eyes strain to make everything out correctly. besides it looks nice and everythings easier to see shapes text everything. its having potential but not using it. it's like being able to save the world and deciding not to because with your super powers it would still be to much effort
