Usually when I write a song, or try to write a song, I come up with a basic sentence of which I want the song to be about. Some examples could be as such:

Write the most fucked up break-up song ever.

Write a song as if you were a dinosaur.

Write a song using the world Electronegativity.

Write a song about really hairy asian women.

As you can see, they can be as random as possible, but they really help someone like me, who can never think of things to write about, to write a song. I'm interested into what you guys think of.

I write songs about experiences in my life. Seems like the easiest way to me.

I write chord progression, then jot out what I want in words.

Like:

Intro: Moving synth pad, with intermittent taiko drums. Eventually moving into rhythmic stacatto strings.

Verse: Powerful french horn melody, violins double the melody 2nd time through.
Chorus: Bring in 2nd harmony for chorus melody.

Interlude: Bring down the intensity, to something very calm. Using spacious synth pads, and ethnic flute. Build up toward the end and...

Chorus: Reprise of chorus. Pull out the stops with heavy brass, strings, taiko, etc.

End: Abrupt end, with pause. Then a final "beat" using taikos. Trailer like.

Sentences? Fuck that. I write haikus to help guide my song writing:

Drum rhythm is fast
a chromatic melody
Once more drum and bass

Or how about this one...

Feeling lack of art
Want to write something sassy
Maybe I.D.M.

Ok, I know they're kind of bad but they help :(

I really hope you aren't being serious about this. If you are, then you have no right to call yourself a composer. If it's just to mess with the gullible, then damn you!!! Lol

And for those of you who posted after Bjra's post, read the thread description.

Single sentences?

I write entire paragraphs explaining my song and build a musical reality from them.

It's the writer in me, because it's a lot harder to score for orchestra than it is to say "Sounds screeching, crashing, blustering their way through the ephemeral veil of reality... Sweet tones are heard distantly, recalling a far-off past, but they are too far away to make a difference...."

You get the idea. Of course, that description is not of a finished work.

As long as you're writing a song with an idea that is original, at least to you, and not a blatant copy of another artist, then you're fine. I you're just sampling a beat but putting a different melody over i, then it's pretty much a cover, not an original thought. Besides, Chord progressions are just a skeleton to build off of. But since most people just like copying others nowadays, EVERYONE will probably be using the same chord progressions. We need some sort of overhaul of ORIGINAL songs and sounds. Don't use set beat/sound guidelines of a certain genre, throw something strange in the mix every once and a while.

Yes i know it's hard to come about making a new beat now adays, but come on, at least try an not just copying and pasting lol

On a completely different note, here's an idea prompt:
Get really dizy and try to wrie something while the world is spinning. =P
