Yup, this is definitely what you want to do. I went through exactly what you were going through, OP. Then finally figured to just use screen capture but since I wanted to make more edits in Final Cut, I screenied the flash but wiht no compression so I could have it at top quality.
Example:
I did this series in flash, screen captured it and posted to youtube.

I also use Mac, I use Snapz Pro. I'm not sure if there are better screen capture programs because I've used it for a long time but it works great for me.. great choice of compression settings and such, easy to use, etc..
