In my opinion only the Russian WW2 gas masks are scary, but they're not really scary just freaky.

They're not scary, they're usually very cool and rad. They show signs of radiation, nuclear weaponry, fallout, and other such sci fi awesomeness. What's more badass than a fully armored man with a gas mask on with a huge rifle, ready to kick some tail? Nothing in my opinion. Gas masks = instant win.

Love gas masks, they're so awesome.
They're just scary because you can't tell who's behind the mask. The wearer's voice changes when you wear it, so that helps make gas masks a little shifty.
