My RE teacher (That's religious education just in case it's called something different in America) Does it quite a lot. Giving us learning objectives like, "Learn why Jesus is lord." She gave "say what you like about Jesus" as a target for my friend to get a better score in the next test.

Actually, the Church did that because it was considered a threat to their power. They did not suppress science out of the desire because God or the religion cared.

I didn't bother because I thought it was quite obvious how bringing up the same old examples crying "OMG INQUISITION AND CRUSADES" all the time is ridiculous. Let me try bringing up "ATOMIC WEAPONS" next time someone wants to argue to support science. It's the same shit. Both have positives and both have negatives. That was the whole point I was trying to get across.

It involves a positive assertion as much as anything else logically deduced. One can never be 100% positive about anything in truth, especially nothing that one has never truly touched or experienced. But to be atheist all you must do is consider god and then come to the conclusion that it's absurd, much like someone walking outside, considering that they are going to be struck by lightening, and then realizing it's absurd because it's a sunny day.

Besides, you are saying that saying atheism is not a religion is false because it involves positive assertions. You define religion by positive assertions?

I don't and the analogy isn't binary. As soon as you introduce a positive assertion, better yet a set of positive assertions, you are leaning more toward religion than not-collecting-stamps leans toward being a hobby. Now, in a broad context, this quality isn't a big deal, as there are tons of things that make positive assertions but don't come close to being a religion. However, in the context in which the analogy is almost always offered, positive assertion is a huge deal - it's practically the focal point of the analogy.

I always thought it was because they came to a certain realization that the god that is believed in by the majority of the population isn't real or is currently unprovable. I've looked in the Bible when I've felt bad at a particular point, because the option is there. If a higher power can help me, let them help me, for fuck's sake.
