My RE teacher (That's religious education just in case it's called something different in America) Does it quite a lot. Giving us learning objectives like, "Learn why Jesus is lord." She gave "say what you like about Jesus" as a target for my friend to get a better score in the next test.

No, no, definitely the former. You're an attention whore, who forced their beliefs (actually, lack of) on their "friend" and who expects a cookie for doing it.

Religion =/= organized religion.
Oh here we go.Yeah, here we go. Discredit me somehow, those are all VALID examples of history.
I can't discredit you because I never denied that those are valid examples of history. They very well are.
Say some to the contrary,
Everything that religion has done that doesn't include suppressing science and inciting violence.
tell me how I'm wrong.
I can't, because you're not. Can I say that science is bad because it led to the creation of extremely powerful weapons and the deaths of thousands if not millions of people? It goes both ways, for religion AND science.
Actually, the Church did that because it was considered a threat to their power. They did not suppress science out of the desire because God or the religion cared.Stop missing the point, I don't care WHY science was suppressed, but the fact that it WAS.
I'm not talking about why, I'm talking about WHO. WHO did it ties into why it WAS. You should care very much about WHY it was.
The church is the single largest factor against science there is, and has been.
Basically.
You guessed wrong.Nice argument, come up with something decent next time.
I didn't bother because I thought it was quite obvious how bringing up the same old examples crying "OMG INQUISITION AND CRUSADES" all the time is ridiculous. Let me try bringing up "ATOMIC WEAPONS" next time someone wants to argue to support science. It's the same shit. Both have positives and both have negatives. That was the whole point I was trying to get across.

Gah! This again! So true but dishonest.
Posed the question "if God," and responding "without God," requires, from any logical person, a qualification of "God" beyond 'His' basic definition.
Atheism is not always a positive assertion in itself, but unless you've never been exposed to the concept of God atheism INVOLVES positive assertions.

It involves a positive assertion as much as anything else logically deduced. One can never be 100% positive about anything in truth, especially nothing that one has never truly touched or experienced. But to be atheist all you must do is consider god and then come to the conclusion that it's absurd, much like someone walking outside, considering that they are going to be struck by lightening, and then realizing it's absurd because it's a sunny day.
Besides, you are saying that saying atheism is not a religion is false because it involves positive assertions. You define religion by positive assertions?

Absolutely.

I don't and the analogy isn't binary. As soon as you introduce a positive assertion, better yet a set of positive assertions, you are leaning more toward religion than not-collecting-stamps leans toward being a hobby. Now, in a broad context, this quality isn't a big deal, as there are tons of things that make positive assertions but don't come close to being a religion. However, in the context in which the analogy is almost always offered, positive assertion is a huge deal - it's practically the focal point of the analogy.

You're an asshole.
I'm also skeptical about whether he's really an atheist now. Someone who fervently believes in god doesn't just think 'oh man, you're right. how silly of me; science is better' after a quick chat with one of his idiot friends.

which never really answers my question...but anyways....
people do change their beilife based on facts...nto on a book written by people who think they could explain thw universe... even though they couldn't even build decent houses....
plus the bible flaws...
and contradictions....
and all the other stuff that can be easily pointed out after reading the bible....
BTW...i've read the WHO FUCKING BIBLE...SO DON'T GO ALL "you prolly never even read the bible :P " ...CAUSE I FUCKIN HAVE....
suck it
Not only do I not know what's going on, I wouldn't know what to do about it if I did.

I always thought it was because they came to a certain realization that the god that is believed in by the majority of the population isn't real or is currently unprovable. Whether the Bible is correct or not is irrelevant to becoming an Atheist. I'm a good example. I disregard 95% of the Bible but still believe in a god.

The ancients weren't stupid. Why is there this assumption that because some people wrote a book that was later declared false they're almost automatically retarded?

I agree with the people who say you're an arsehole. You made yourself an authority figure in another person's beliefs by forcing your own on him and you might have imposed a dogmatic belief based on his interpretation of your own beliefs.

If that were true, it would only serve to reinforce the immorality of forcing religion on a child.
Haha, I've just finished reading this thread in full, and I've got to say that I'm very intrigued by many of the arguments here. Now, you'll have to forgive me in this post: I'm slightly drunk, but I know what my views on this sort of issue are for now, in the basics. Strangely enough, as multi-sided as the glourious religion versus atheism argument is, I think it's easy to have a fairly one-sded, yet fair view, and I'll explain why I think this, personally.
Religion. That's a funny thing isn't it? Bible, Bible, creationism, creationism, made-up, yes? What's that got to do with the gritty reality of an uptown street? Or maybe, what's that got to do with the robber who's just stabbed a completely innocent citizen to steal the little cash he's got? Madness isn't it, to believe in a higher power. I'm maintaining, myself, that hope, belief in a higher power is not a community decision, but an individual decision. Forget about even the friendliest of independant religious communities for one moment and think to the people who might believe in religion. Maybe it keeps them going that little bit more in what is otherwise a shithole of a life. Maybe it's a symbol at the same time, that they will come out of their tunnel of a problem stronger as a result. I've read parts of the Bible, mostly New Testament, lots of times. Do I believe in God? I have no fucking idea. Do I believe society was created from the ground up? Not intending to put many years of study to shame, but I don't fucking know. I've looked in the Bible when I've felt bad at a particular point, because the option is there. If a higher power can help me, let them help me, for fuck's sake. I don't give a shit about politics in this sense. Politics in this case, is irrelvant to me as a person.
Oh, sorry: religious organisations that take advantage of what they have to manipulate others, extreme examples taking the spotlight thanks to a very insightful social institution known as the media. Oh, you know, there's this thing I've heard about that might be more responsible for that, but I have to be quite subtle in linking it, because between you and me, some people don't like to hear it. We shouldn't be looking at that though, because if we don't, we're traitors aren't we? Sorry guys. Sorry for not looking at religion, race, sexuality, political opinion, subculture, psychological history, education experience, among other things. I'm really sorry. It doesn't spur, in our western societies, from the thing I'm talking about. No, sorry.
I think I've wasted your time enough now, if you're reading this. This was criminally brief in what I think overall, but please, you know?
