So recently, I was just trolling a Goth kid by calling him Emo. The moron got all uppity about how I was labeling him and making myself look arrogant and stupid by labeling in general.

This got me thinking, how would labeling be so bad?

Then I got it, this anti-labeling bullshit was made so they can all feel like a special snowflake. I laughed at this and went back to labeling his ass.

TL;DR- Label. It shatters every emo kid's dreams of being original.

On one hand, people aren't just their labels. Not all pot smokers are stupid, always-stoned hippies with nothing on their minds but drugs and music, and a lot of them listen to music you wouldn't associate with hippies or weed (though the musicians were doing drugs of their own). Labels can be seen and used as an unfair categorization, which fucking sucks and you shouldn't be so retarded as to use them that way.

On the other hand, they exist for a damn good reason. People who hang out together, dress alike, and listen to the same music often have a lot in common. Get entire groups doing it, you can slap a label on them that often gives you a general idea of what you're dealing with once you know what the label means. It helps to know how people label you, and play to or against the label as it benefits you.

Now that is just stupid what you said. Have you even heard REAL goth music? or just some weird generalization of it? And emo used to be just those people you classified as 'nerd' in the 80s. They absorbed goth, which was not as bad, and created this shitty generation of shitspawn.
In some cases, labeling is good. Goth is dead, and anyone who says they are goth, are just faggoth posers, most likely emos trying to be slightly different. And emos totally deserve to be labeled. They are the shittiest scene ever. Just a bunch of preppies thinking they have it hard.

it is truely a shame that you feel that way. and to anyone who agrees with you. almost 100% of the time your judgements about people will be false, because no one can be labeled. we are all made up of an infinite number and quantity of traits and beliefs aquired over a life time, so to judge someone on an undoubtedly insignificant belief or style is foolish and almost always inaccurate. that goth kid and you have loads in common, simply because you are both people. but because you choose to label him and so different from you- and in a bad way, you will never get to know him and for all you know, he could really bail your ass out one day, or be your best friend for life. labeling isn't just bad, it's a tragedy.

Labeling is a necessary part of society, it helps us make generalizations, that although "blinding" help us to blanket results over entire groups, and despite being blinded blanketed results, we are almost never wrong but when we are... we should change our views of this individual, not the entire group.
