I really don't understand your logic.
This project of Nathan's has been in the works since November 2008. Not only has he invested his own money in getting it off the ground, he's also invested a lot of time making things like the Plushies to fund what he's doing. If he'd been in the UK, he'd have gotten a great deal more in all this time from just being on benefits. You'd get more in student loans, etc, etc. It's not like he's asking for handouts.
By the time you factor in travelling thousands of miles, food and accommodation costs, you certainly wouldn't get any change out of $5,000. If you think you can do better, then I suggest you do it, rather than belittling other people for trying.
