Why does china block websites?

I've known for a while they block popular websites like facebook/twitter/myspace/yahoo

But why? Do they want to piss people off? And why do they have so many internet police who arrest you if you use a proxy? What are they hiding?

China needs to control the flow of information into the countries internet network, should the citizens of china discover the ways of the west it may spark major rebellions against the government, and china has a habbit of using tanks to stop these things and they dont want that much bad publicity because they depend on tourism as much as anyone else.

PS: I put into the chinese google the chinese word for tiananmen square instead of english and got over 9 million results almost 10kk

The China is a huge country with 1 billion population.The Spartan goverment didn't want its citizens to have a connection with the rest of the Greece because they thought they would be jealous or smth and they would rebel.

The vast differences between the traditional Marxist theories (and their offspring) and the practices of P.R China's government aside, as they've already been brought up, censorship wouldn't necessarily be a part of the more positive intellectual idealism behind it all after a more natural form of revolution. I'm weak on it all, and it's such a vast subject. My point is though that being "communist" is hardly the real reason for mass censorship. The government wishes to promote what they believe to be the most productive values in society. Since 1976 and the start of Deng Xiaoping's big influence, it's not even been a case of just looking through The Little Red Book or related materials.

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense, but really, it's not as simple as "communism is evil", and it probably never was... variations an' all...
