I can understand if you mix music, but I can't ever imagine dropping that kind of cash for head phones...
Thing is, the only thing I can even listen to music on anymore and enjoy it is this set of old Boston speakers I inherited from my parents. Anything coming out of this modern stuff just doesn't compare to some cheep wood vibrating along with the music... and though I'm sure 100 - 1000 dollars would sufficiently increase my enjoyment of music, I don't think I could bring my self to do it. :o
It all depends on what you're wanting from music. If you appreciate the subtleties of what you're listening to, you go for the higher end stuff. If you take a track like Radian by Air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U42tNCEI THc), you can really pick out the details of each instruments etc on a decent set of headphones or monitors. Details that would otherwise be lost on cheaper alternatives (in that track, on a good set of headphones or monitors, you can almost feel like you're right there in the room with the people who're playing the instruments.) Oh, and if you're going to listen to that track I linked, keep in mind that it's going to have been compressed significantly, you're better off getting a CD when trying to draw comparisons.
The "modern stuff" as you put it actually offers much more clarity than anything in the past, but you have to be prepared to pay the right amount of cash to get the right system. One of my friends is heavily into music and took out a loan several years ago to pay nearly £4,000 (around $6,5000) for an Arcam system that literally would blow your mind if you heard the clarity that comes from it. And he opted for a cheaper setup than he was actually after. I've noticed that Arcam have since started offering smaller, more budgetable, setups.
As for the next set of headphones I plan on getting - they will probably be either the Beyerdynamic DT 100 or Beyerdynamic DT 150's, which are designed for studio work and broadcasting etc and cost around $170, though I was talking to Shok a while ago about this and he recommended other sets.... which I've since forgotten. I'll have to ask him again, I guess.
