There's actually already been weird patterns on the ground and found structures that look like ancient buildings, and there's water there. Unless of course there wasn't Life on Mars and it was just some passing Aliens thinking "Let's makes patterns on that planet for the lulz." that's pretty much anything left, some form of Civilization was there, end of. Plus a planet's climate changes over years, say a million years ago, Mar's could have been a planet that Humanity and any race could survive on and then there's also a possibility that the race that once lived there had a natural resistant to Coldness. (High Blood temperatures, etc.)
And no, I don't have a degree in Galactic Science and I'm not a well-respected member of NASA, but you don't need these things to just do some research, all you need is some books and the Internet .
