I want to sing, I really do - i've wanted to sing since I was a little kid, but you see, every time I ever tried to sing when I was alone I felt like my voice was far too crackly PLUS I had no idea what my voice, legitimately sounded to others since I was the one singing.

Every time i've tried singing in front of others I was just fooling around and not singing for real because I was too embarrassed they'd think I suck.

I've never recorded my voice because I don't own anything I can record my voice with.

And I never took chorus or other such classes in elementary or middle school because I was too embarrassed at the time.

But it's not that i'm embarrassed to sing, it's that i'm embarrassed to sing in front of people I know - I always sing along at concerts and such fine, even if no one else is. (No one ever told me if i'm good or bad though)

Now I am 16(Yes, I admit that when I first joined I said I was this age) and at a point of my life where stuff I do matters and I need to start finding stuff I enjoy doing and stuff i'm good at so I can find my career for the rest of my life.

But you see, I have no real talents for anything I can see myself doing in the future.

And the only thing I really enjoy is music...

I want to learn to sing clean, high-pitched vocals soooooo bad.

Here are some singers i'd like to sound like some day:

Opeth(the clean vocals only)
Old helloween
Oldest Sonata Arctica.
Dream Theater from the early 90's.

Etc, i'd like to become a falsetto vocalist like Bruce Dickson, Timo Kotipelto, Tony Kakko, Lance King, Michael Kiske, etc. or AT LEAST be able to sing normal clean vocals good like Mikael Åkerfeldt and James LaBrie.

I'd like advice such as: Basic singing tips, Good songs to practice my vocal range, how much I should practice singing a day, How do I find a good vocal teacher, How much I should be paying for a vocal teacher(So I don't get jipped), how do I know if i'm actually hurting myself.(Which I heard can happen if you sing any type of vocals in metal wrongly for a long time) and over such things.

Help.

I wish I could sing, I'd be like Rodger Waters.

Can't you go to your school's chorus and join to improve your voice? Also, I heard Karaoke helps with your singing. For me, it may not look it, but I can sing pretty high, like Steel Panther or Guns N' Roses high.

But it's not that simple, my high school doesn't offer any singing classes - And even if it did I HIGHLY doubt they'd teach me how to do Falsetto.

And I don't know how to find a private singing teacher or anything like that and even if I did, how much would be a good amount to pay? How would I know if the teacher is good or not? Etc.

I would actually sing death metal vocals if it weren't for the fact that i'd be too scared that I would destroy my voice permanently.

Just find your range. You cannot decide how you start.

For me, I work well with later Pink Floyd, David Bowie and later Who.

My sister can do some higher songs.

If you don't have a mic, you should get one.

Me, personally, I can't sing. I really wish I could as well, because it would open doors that remain closed to me. I'm probably much worse at singing than you, even when I put forth my best efforts. My voice is completely flat and monotone--I have no range whatsoever and anyone who has ever had a conversation with me would know that.

God fucking damn it...

If you want to increase your range/get a clearer tone, Do these.

Every day, if you can. Go to the point where you're comfortable, don't strain your voice, etc. You'll increase your range faster than any other way of singing, and it's for free yo. The exercises can seem retarded but they're worth doing in the long run.

Singing is amazing and I'm learning too. I'm going to get a teacher soon but for now I'm just doing these SLS things and they're pretty cool.

A good start, if you play any instrument, like a violin, play the all the strings one every few seconds and as you play it hum (with mouth open) to the exact sound thats coming out of the violin.

Do this for a while you should get into the hang of singing clearly.

Help.

I sing. So here's my two cents.

The main thing you have to do is develop confidence. Confidence is key when singing solo. Hell, confidence is the key to singing steadily in the first place.

I suggest you join a musical (your school probably does one). My voice only truly developed after I got involved in my school musicals because not only does it help you practice, being part of the stage gives you a MASSIVE confidence boost. Trust me, I know from experience. I used to be far too shy, until I landed lead roles in the theater at my Highschool, and now I'm not shy at all and genuinely more confident.

If you're really serious find yourself a voice coach and start learning the piano (you'll be glad you did, they go hand in hand). My old coach, Dave, was an opera singer and master of the piano. He charged $15 a month (20 is probably the max you should go for) and he ended up teaching me both piano and voice at the same time. If you can find someone like that you're set.

High notes are the dick end of singing though. You have to support your voice from your gut (this was the biggest milestone for me, figuring out what exactly you have to do and support from where), but once you manage to get it right you'll be able to run right up the scale with ease.

The thing to watch for is strain. Until you manage to find the exact "spot" in your gut to support the high notes you might accidentally be pulling on your throat. This is pretty much the only injury you could get and you'll feel it don't worry. Also never forget to warm up.

Good luck.

Yeah, I wanna learn how to sing too. My voice seems almost too baritone though, to the point where it doesn't sound like it could produce a useful tone. I can actually hit some high notes though, like I can sing spot on to Prince usually, as well as I can go to seemingly bass notes as well, but there's too many holes in my range for it to be even effective...

Do you play any instruments? If you don't, then learn one, or hang around with someone who does. An instrument could help DRASTICALLY in your singing ranges. To start off, you should try playing simple notes, such as E, G, B, D, F. Those are the basic singing notes. When playing them on a guitar or piano, try humming along to the tune. Then, simple open your mouth, trying to create the same tune made when humming. You should make an "Aaah" sort of sound if you drop your jaw. Now, replace this "aaah" sound with an actual word, such as "cat" or "tree". Now, you'll be able to sing your first word. Keep practicing this method for about two days or so, then try moving to a different note. After you've mastered each note using keywords, try varying between those notes, switching from E to F, or G to B etc.

Next, replace these keywords with Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, and Ti. As you progress through the notes, they go higher, Ti being the highest in most conditions. After you've begun your scale through the notes, try performing exercises such as:

Exercise #1
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So! So, Fa, Mi, Re, Do!

Exercise 2
Do, So, Fa, So, Mi, So, Re, So, Do, So, Fa, So, Mi, Re, Do. And Repeat three or four times.

After you've done these exercises, you'll be more skilled in scaling, and you'll be able to tell what sort of voice you have. If you're a tenor, try hitting higher notes, such as Ti, to figure out your range. If you're a bass, then try hitting lower notes, such as Do, to figure out your range. Have a music teacher at your school tell you out what sort of singer you are, and try participating in musicals at your school and such. If your school doesn't support those, then try joining a music class such as chorus, or try singing with a band.

Lastly, after you've learned how to scale, and read notes and such, start searching Google for sheet music and download it. Try singing simple songs at first, then progress to more advanced ones.

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys - Appreciate it!

One of you said you spent 15 bucks a MONTH on a vocalist + Piano tutor...is that really how much i'll probably find a teacher for?

I mean, there are guitar tutors that make you pay 50 bucks an hour and whatnot.

More advice would be appreciated.

Oh balls, my bad. I meant $15 a lesson.

More advice would be appreciated.

It's all in the exercises. Just remember to be proud and confident and your voice won't crack as easily. Also do you already play any instruments? If you already have a hold on the clefs or pitch recognition you'll catch on a lot easier.

1. Breath from your diaphragm (stomach breathing). You want to sing with power.
2. Search Youtube for vocal warm-ups routines that you should do everyday (mostly scales, but singing with a particular sound in order to coordinate and warm up different parts of your voice)

The main goal is to free the voice, to keep it relaxed, and to open it up so it can have a full sound and utilize vibrato.

Basically, it's hard to teach in text, you should find a vocal coach if you have money, but you can also go on a Youtube search journey and find a lot of helpful tips and warmups and stuff.

eh.

keep your stomach tight when going for those high notes, sing with your throat not your chest or your nose. exhale normally when singing, not so slow or so fast that it strains you or you gasp for air.
