Yankee is a reappropriation that the New Yorkers gave themselves after the colonization of America.
This is a curse word that the Britts gave the Dutch people, from the colony New-Netherland (That later on is called New York), the name "Jan Kees" because it's a very idiotic and common Dutch name.
So HA!

It was New-Amsterdam indeed. Not New-Netherland.
Also, I wouldn´t call the names Jan and Kees idiotic. They´re just simple names. And they´re not so common anymore either, only under old folks.
But it is true that the term Yankees is derived from it.

Yankee does origenate from Jan Kees. Or arguably Jan Kaas ( Which stands for cheese, and kind of pronounced like kees ). Jan being a typical dutch name, my father's name is jan for example lol, en cheese was a typical product of holland.
All in all, i don't think it would really matter much since people don't consider it as a curse word. Some americans are proud to be a yankee? ( Or aren't they?)

My dad's name is Jan, it's still common with Dutch people, but most are getting named John or Jon instead of Jan.
