Which one is better? Are 2-dimensional animated movies old and useless or are 3 dimensional movies overused?

It's the same. 1D more, 1D less, who cares.

Both of those have some amazing works that would not work on the opposite.

Honestly, 3-d movies are cool, but I hope 2-D movies don't die out. That'd just be a shame.

According to Disney, 3D is much better, because even their 2D movies are actually rendered in 3D.

I think 2D allows more freedom for the animation style, but one could animate in 3D and have his own style.

2D and 3D are just mediums, what it boils down to is who is telling the better story. Granted, 3d is cheaper to make, so you're going to see a lot more of it now than you saw 2D I'd imagine.

How is 3D cheaper? I would think making those would be a lot more money than a 2D movie.

because up to a couple of minuets of 3d can be animated in a day where 2d would take a week or so to achieve the same time. the biggest down side to 3d is the render time, that is what kills ya

I think both are amazing and should be used forever. Whatever helps get the vision turned into a reality.

Lame. I still think that 2D movies help keep and that old school style of animation to it and there's not much of that anymore.

I prefer 2D. It's more of a fine art than 3D which is more like architechture

I believe that you can't really put them against each other.

If you say "Oh 3D is better because it is cleaner then 2D" or "2D is better because it requires more skill" it just doesn't work that way.

3D you have modeling and other things, while in 2D you do not. In 2D you have to make a way to make the animation not look flat, other wise it will come out funky and lame.

So in reality, when doing 2D you are trying your best to get a 3D effect, not just paper. While sometimes you may be going for a flat environment, most of the time you are not.

In my opinion though, i like watching a 2D animation more then one made in Maya or Milkshape 3D.

Wake me up when we get to 5D movies and the characters and objects literally pop out the scree and interact with you.

And no, I'm not talking about those 4D shows; those are bullshit.

I'd rather die a Wolf fighting against the Herder, than die a Sheep heading for the slaughter.

I'm generally more inclined to watch a 3D movie than a 2D one. I guess it's probably cos I grew up with the likes of Toy Story, Bug's Life, Antz... y'know all the decent ones. All the 3D ones nowadays look shit though.

Mind you, I still can't wait to see Toy Story 3...

I enjoy both 2-D and 3-D. If one was to fade away, I'd get bored of the one that was still around.

Going by some of these posts, people seem to be confused.

By 3D are you referring to a film where you must wear special glasses, and the film appears to jump out of the screen? Or are we talking about films using 3D models as oppose to a 2D cartoon, such as Mickey Mouse?

I like smooth 2D. Like MapleStory (the community sucks, the game is meh, the art is beautiful).

Animation is animation, there's pretty much no way to go wrong. Like everybody else is saying, it comes down to what fits the story better.

Now I love movies like Wall-E and Toy Story, but I still have a large place in my heart for the 2D animations I grew up with. I also prefer 2D to 3D because of the fact that it is much easier to look at and it doesn't do all these lame camera effects. One movie I saw recently in 2D was Ponyo, and that movie made me feel like a kid again, 3D movies can't seem to do that.

I like 2D more, MUCH more imagination and creativity can go into it, more realistic isn't always better, superjail is a perfect example of what I'm trying to say. 3D is over used now anyway, it's grown stale.

2D movies are pretty classic, can be beautiful and I agree take more skill but in the end 3D is always going to look cleaner and more efficient

it's just the way it is
our universe is 3 dementional so idealy people including artists and animators are going to want to get closer to that design

also this belongs in the flash forum
