So I saved up $300 and I was thinking about getting the xbox 360 elite game of the year bundle, but I've heard horror stories about how their xbox got red ring of death the first time they started it, and I'm not sure if I should get it or not, so I thought I'd come here and ask for some opinions, what do you guys think?

Go for it. Mine ringed on me - then I just opened it myself and fucked with the connections and thermal gel and it's been fine ever since.

the failure rate is like 53% though, be sure to get the warranty.

That's another thing, I've heard they send you a crappily refurbished one that breaks down in the first few days, so i'm even more hesitant.

I don't know, I'm afraid to buy it because I think it's going to blow up into tiny bits. I've heard so many horror stories about it

When my xbox got the red ring, which, mind you, was a couple of years ago, microsoft fixed it for free. So you have nothing to worry about really.

No no no, lol. It won't explode and destroy half your living room; that's just exaggeration.

All that happens is that the CPU and the graphics chip heat up so much (when I had mine opened the CPU heated up so fast I couldn't keep my finger on it past 1 second of turning the thing on) that the solder that holds the pins and whatnot around the chips actually melts and shifts, disconnecting the connections and thus causing a ring out.

That or the motherboard bends from the heat and shitty X-clamps and disconnects them that way.

But no it won't kill you.

Yes, the failure rate was something like 60% for first-gen 360s. But they've fixed those problems. As a result, you can buy an Xbox 360 and get a reliable system with the best warranty out there. No shit~ if it dies, send it to MS, they schedule it for refurbishing, and you get a new, no-flaw system.

I was joking pretty much, but are there any ways from preventing it from over heating? I don't want to buy one unless I know it won't turn into this:

Yeah, put it next to your air conditioner.

Or do what I did and strip it down to the motherboard, remove the cooling blocks and replace the thermal gel with some Arctic Silver.

I'm afraid that will get rid of the warranty, so I'll just stick with getting 5 mini fans or something and keep them running next to it 24/7

More features on LIVE though, so shut the fuck up.

YOU HAVE HEARD, but have not witnessed these things, so many people either made that shit up or had the rare unfortunate event of it happening to them. Do not assume that it will happen to you the first time or some shit, my Xbox got the RRoD and my dad got an Arcade (old white one last year) and that's been fine. Also, the fans suck, they cause errors n shit so don't get those.

it rarely happens the first time you start it up. it has happened to my old xbox 360 but it actually had nothing to do with the inside of it, it was the external AC adaptor that was faulty. i suggest you get one because they are a good console and have many great features adnd exclusive games.

i have had my 2nd xbox 360 for almost a year now and it has worked.

you all seriously cant be this retarded.

all the problems you guys are talking about deal with the first gen xbox 360s.

the elites are perfectly fine. and IF it does fucks up, print off a sticker, take off the hard drive and send it back to microsoft and they send you a new one.

The failure rate has been greatly expanded from the actual truth. I've had my xbox 360 for about a year and a half, and haven't had any problems at all. Most of the horror stories you'll hear now are from Playstation "Fanboys" or from people just looking to shit on someone's day.

I'd say if you have the cash, go for it, but make sure to invest in Xbox Live otherwise you'll probably get bored very early.

If you saved up $300.00 you should get a slim PS3. Then you don't have to worry about the RROD. PS3 sometimes has the YLOD but I haven't experienced it and from what I've heard it's no where near as bad as the 360 RROD. I knew people at work that had gone through 5 360s cause they kept crapping out on him. Also with PS3 you don't need to pay to play online. And despite what I've heard 360 users say PS3 actually doesn't lag often when you play online.

This guy's a prime example of my previous post, lol.

Just another Fanboy pissed that someone's getting an Xbox.

A recent survey shows that Xbox 360 failures have dropped to 23.7% for the first two years of ownership. This was according to data based on 1,000 claims that SquareTrade has received.

Another survey back in August, said 54.2% of all Xbox 360 owners have had their console fail at least once.

Microsoft has implemented a smaller and cooler chipset called Jasper along with a new 65nm graphics chip compared to the 90nm for older 360s.

I would say buy the Xbox 360 as I never had any issues with mine and it's two years old. However, I do know people who had to replace or repair their Xbox 360 games more than once. If you decide to buy it, don't try to fix it yourself because you will void out the warranty.

I would say "video games forum" but I am not an obnoxious douchebag. Anyway, I've had my 360 for over a year and a half. No problems whatsoever and it is an elite. So, buy the system, it's only 299 now.

As an owner of a ps3, and an xbox at first, i was highly disappointed in the xbox's performance. At first i thought they were going to be equal systems, but i was wrong. The xbox immediately broke down within a month of playing and i sent it in. Microsoft has great service, but i then continued to send it in. SIX times.

Luckily i was able to sell the xbox for a 1/4 of the price purchased, and i've been using the ps3 since. I also use the bluray a lot more then i thought i would, and ps3 has been updating like shit, and their online is starting to get really good.

PS3 is expensive, most of the games suck, (I do like LBG and the Uncharted games, though)Blu-ray is overrated, and xbox live is $5 a month and comes with all these delicious sides. Oh, and you don't have to wait for 4 hours to play a game while it slowly downloads.

In an attempt not to be marked 'vicious xbox fanboy': Get an elite. Elites don't get RROD'd, mainly. It's like a 2% chance, and if you do, Microsoft has made it free to get your RROD fixed. I've never had the RROD, although I did have Error 74 once, and I sent it to microsoft and got it fixed.

This is the most retarded joke I've ever heard..

You do understand that turning 360 degrees puts you right back in that same place you started, right?

To OP though, I've had both systems, got my elite now (sold ps3), and I've had more fun with it than I ever had with my PS3. Sure, the controls aren't exactly to my liking, but games are better, Live is pretty fun, and well.. All in all, I kinda wish I didn't get one earlier.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help. I've just got one more question.

This was the xbox I was going to buy, but I was wondering if they just put some shitty refurbished xbox in there, and that's why it's so cheap and comes with 2 games.
