But aren't best stories those that elicit a strong reaction?

I've read a lot of his books (haven't read the short stories one that Guts comes from, but might eventually). Personally, I think his stories are quite good, but the man just can't write an ending. Even he admitted that the ending to the Fight Club movie was better than the one in the book.

Woah... I just read Guts, and that's all I can say. It was certainly a great story, I enjoyed it, even if it was "weird", to say the least. Now I got a bit more interested and I hope that I can read more from this author in the future. It looks like several people in this thread know his stuff and like it, so probably he has written some good books I'd like to read.

Thanks for making the thread :)

I read that years ago, because somebody copy/pasted it onto the forums here, I believe. It is brilliant writing, it certainly elicits the reaction it's setting out to get from readers.

However, I haven't read any of his other stuff. In all honesty, I haven't really been reading books with any regularity since High School. Reading lists and required reading really put me off doing so for my own enjoyment. Another problem is that I tend to only want to read good books, so what happens is I become engrossed to the point of obsession with the book I'm on. I don't put the book down until I'm through, and that eats up my time for other things (ie: important things that I don't enjoy).

But, that's besides the point. Chuck Palahniuk has been on my list of 'authors to check out' for ages now. Here's another personal recommendation to add to the pile.

This story is fiction, correct?

Either way, disgusting. I read this a few years ago and never wanted to think about it again.

Good read, though.

Ah - I heard a lot of buzz about that book and wanted to give it a read. Do you have to already have the original 'Pride and Prejudice' read before starting the parody?

no,
I was ontop of the buzz... but I've been reading zombie literature before the buzz, that's for sure.

There is a WONDERFUL anthology of short zombie stories called "The Living Dead"-- I got that before it hit the book stores. One of the best things you can read... has major writers like Stephen King and Niel Gaimon, and others smaller writers too.

Click "Assimilate or Die" in my signature line to read my zombie parable... if you're interested.

Devils Food Cake, Morning Has Broken, The Glory Hole, Assimilate or Die.

I actually felt quite sick reading that.
I just finished and I have the sensation of needing to just sit down and breath heavily...

It's more based on 'what if that happened to me', than the description...

I remember in middle school some brought Haunted onto a field trip bus. Everyone went nuts.

I feel like I am in a very fortunate case as far as reading Fight Club goes, because I seem to be the only person on Earth who hasn't seen the movie, and I know almost nothing about it, so, its all gonna be band new for me.

I'll start reading it soon.

I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they would greet me with cries of hate.

I thought I was the only one who enjoyed the book Fight Club more than the movie, and Guts, though not my favorite book, is still a brilliant piece if literature.

I know.

Haunted was great. Guts was probably the best short story of Haunted, which I just recently finished.
Throughout that book, I couldn't stop thinking about Guts.

Also, he said that in his public readings (Bookstores, community centers, etc) several people would faint during the reading.

I found this to be very impressive.

Shrike, have you read Pygmy?
I just started it, and was wondering if it gets any easier to understand it. I'm not a big fan of that style of writing, it's way too hard to understand.

=[ Sadly, I bought it, and I have not had the opportunity to read it yet. Terry Pratchett being diagnosed with Alzheimers made me go on a Discworld kick for a while.

HA HA HA

I had just finished jerking it, as a matter of fact. Good thing, 'cause afterwards, I had no desire to do so at all.

It's like the world's best joke, placing that story in a porno mag.

Mine must be a more updated version, in the end of the book, he said that the number has swelled to 72.

It's written from the point of view of a soldier from China, come to sabotage America, but it posing as a foreign exchange student.
It's written improper grammar, how you'd expect someone who just came from China to sound.

Oh, I know the general idea behind it. It sounds like a great book, and it's been lonely since I bought it. Poor little thing... sitting on the shelf all alone.. *sniff*

But yeah. I'll get around to it soon. I'm almost done with the other stuff I'm reading right now.

The thing is, I'm really used to reading in proper grammar, perfect.
When I read this, it's hard for me to put together the mental image.

I can get the general idea of, but it's very difficult.

Have you read Choke? I wanted to know if the movie or book was better.

It's kinda like Fight Club in that the whole Movie vs Book thing really depends on personal taste.

Read it if you get the chance.

Just finished, and I enjoyed it. Very graphic, especially during the attacks, which made the story fairly intense. I also like the ongoing theme of assimilation/ethnic identity throughout the piece and how you tied that back into the zombie issue at the end.

I read Haunted a few years back when I was flying over to Spain for a holiday, I just couldn't put it down. I think my favourite story was the one about the Millionair/ess that was looking for a new fetish so she dressed as a tramp and walked to streets to get beaten up and whatnot. I can't remember the exact details but I always thought that idea was awesome.

Off topic question for you. I may have asked ages ago. Is your screen name based on the Shrike from the Endymion series of books by Dan Simmons or is it based on the Greek Prince of olde?

Wow. Dan Simmons' Shrike in the Hyperion series (I believe Endymion was one of the later ones)

I think you're the first person to even come close when asking.

I love you.

And I love this thread.

And I love Chuck Palahniuk.

I've seen the Choke and Fight Club, I've read every single one of Palahniuks books, I've read his short stories, became an active member of his website, and have high hopes to meet him in person.

I loved the book Lullaby. And I've memorized so many of Palahniuks quotes that can be easily applied to life.

Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life.
