Surgery. Let's face it, it's unpleasant at the best of times, as even if all goes well, recovery can (and usually is) rather painful. Just yesterday I had to get a sebaceous cyst removed from my chest, I was under local anesthetic so I was wide awake throughout (and being interested in medicine, I couldn't help taking a peek). However, I've had plenty of experience under the knife, prior to this in July '07 my appendix went from fine to very badly infected in less than 24 hours, although fortunately I acted quickly and got my ass into hospital as fast as I could.

So tell me Newgrounds, have you had surgery before, and what was the overall experience like for you? For those who haven't, would you fear that you might have a bad reaction to anesthetic, or that something else may go awry?

Shitty quality pic related; it's my chest post-op (the blood makes it look worse than it is, it's only a flesh wound).

Your surgical experiences?

during soccer, my coach kicked the ball, i blocked it "i was the goal keeper" it broke my hand and dislocated my wrist. i found out it did both a day after, my father saw my hand and he asked me to move it. i couldnt; he knew i broke it...

the pain sucked balls, becuase they had to put my dislocated wrist back to the proper posture while my hand is still broken and hold it there the whole time while they were fixing my broken arm.

About a year ago whilst at a friends house my appendix decided to spontaneously explode. After 6 hours in the waiting room, and 3 Indian (male) doctors each fondling my balls, (because balls are directly linked to the appendix) the doctor finally comes back and tells me that im fine and i definitely don't have appendicitis, but they were going to keep me over night for observation

So after one of the most painful nights of my life, my now burst appendix managed to infect my bladder and small intestine and generally fuck up my insides. after which my incredibly smart doctor returns and tells me that i DO have appendicitis and i need to go into surgery straight away. After surgery i have 3 giant scars opposed to the normal 1 or 2 keyhole scars in a normal appendix operation.

on the plus side i got to keep a picture of my nuked appendix. made for some fun times at school :D

I had a suss mole taken out of my back once.
Then it came back and I had it taken out again.
Pretty much just that.

Around about 2 years ago, my left eye was drifting dangerously far, almost into the side of my eye, so I had surgery to cut down the overcompensating muscle that was driving it to the side.
It went well until it turned out I am allergic to Propofol, a anaetstic usually used for surgery.
It was pretty horrible recovering from that.
The eye was fine otherwise, but I spent three days in bed sleeping the drug and the allergic reaction off.
The eye only had minor pain after that recovery.

My computer's breaking down, so nope.

Six years ago, I had a Spina-Bifida related growth removed from the back of my head.
It had been there since I was born, thanks to the stupid doctors going against my mom's will.

Thankfully, I'm over it all.

I had my tonsils out when i was four. I was put to sleep and the only thing I remember is eating ice cream for a week afterward. Even though my throat was very sore it was alright I suppose.

A couple years back I had a BB removed from my foot after having been there unnoticed for a year and a half to two years. Got put under again, woke up in recovery, nothing hurt, went home. That experience was just fine.

Latest would be wisdom teeth removal. Got put under, woke up without pain but completely sober. Jumped out of the chair walked to the car. My mom drove me home. On the way the anesthesia caught up and made me slightly loopy but still coherent enough to do shit. By this time the pain was starting to kick in so I got my prescription filled popped a vicodin and passed out. That one wasnt bad, but the only part id willingly do over is taking the vicodin.

Two surgeries (in detail below), with a possibility of a third one due to a possible case of sculiosis.

1. Breathing problems, adnoids (similar to tonsils) taken out, felt like crap a good while after that.
2. Wisdom teeth pulled, could only eat soggy or soft stuff for a while.

Sucks.

July 23, 1998: I had an orchiopexy performed on me by a pediatric urologist. One of my balls didn't drop and they had to do a bit of work to get it into my nutsack. The doctor knocked me out with cherry-scented sevoflurane and the next thing I knew, I woke up in the recovery room feeling nauseous and with a fucked up voice as a result of intubation. Later that night, after puking a few times on the way out of the hospital, I was drinking ginger ale, eating fig newtons, and went to see my dying 93-year-old great-grandmother in Scranton, PA (she died just 2 days later).

January 10, 2008: I went to an oral surgeon to get all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth removed. Although I could have been IV sedated with propofol, midazolam and fentanyl, I decided I was fine with just local anesthesia. The whole thing took about a half hour. Post-surgery, I took a little bit of ibuprofin, Vicodin and Amoxicillin the first 2 days, then I stopped taking my medication altogether. The stitches completely dissolved on the 17th, exactly one week after the surgery.

God fucking damn it...

The closest thing I've had to surgery is getting my eye teeth taken out the dentist could put in a spacer. I looked at the root of one of them it it was fucking huge, it felt really gross when he was moving it back and forth, you could hear cracking and everything.

I've had oral surgery twice. It is not fun. The first was to remove a baby tooth that refused to come out, and then I had all four wisdom teeth taken out at once. Bleeding constantly from your mouth for a week is not fun.

I found the emoticon I chose most appropriate.

In chronological order:

I had three sets of ear tubes when I was young, spread out over the course of I think about 7 or 8 years. Those little tubes between the ear and the nose, I forget what they're called. Mine were unusually narrow, so fluid didn't drain properly and I got tons of ear infections. I still have to be careful to keep them clear. I always threw up from the anesthetic, but I could hear stuff a lot better.

When I was seven, I got seven stitches on my chin. I split it open by hitting it on the toilet when I was getting out of the bathtub (go me). I was terrified, and it took five people to hold me still enough for the doctor to administer them. Jesus Christ.

When I was probably seven or eight, I had my tonsils removed. I remember the anesthetic being extremely unpleasant, like I was being sucked down a drain. I didn't throw up this time (thank god, that would have been awful) but my throat hurt horribly for weeks and I lived on smoothies and ice cream.

My most recent surgical experience was when I was 11 or 12, right after Christmas. I was attacked by a pitbull and it bit me in my left cheek. It didn't make it through, but I had numerous stiches. I know that the top layer was had 20 of them. It was horribly swollen for weeks, and when it finally started draining it was disgusting. There was air and puss in there.

I've never broken a bone though, strangely enough.

The best one was when I was having four impacted teeth removed. Local anaesthetic and laughing gas, so I was aware of what was happening during the whole procedure.

It was weird overall, because it was a fancy office where they let you watch a movie during the surgery. I picked "O Brother, Where Art Thou" but the headphones were only playing static. Of course, by the time they put the headphones in, it was too late for me to tell them anything, so I was watching a movie to the sound of them talking bullshit to each other, like who got how drunk at the last big party, gossiping about people they all knew, etc.

During this, because of the anaesthetic, I barely felt any pain, but could feel pressure, so I could feel them cutting through my teeth and rolling them out of my gums with pliers. Best part of the surgery was when I felt something splash out of my mouth, then head the dentist say "Why do these people always wear white?" Turned out to just be saliva, not that it mattered (I had purposely worn an old white t-shirt that I never wear in case it got blood on it).

Also, one of the assistants was one of my old public school classmates :/

Overall a pretty bizarre experience, but not something I would call unpleasant.

Knee surgery. Hereditary problems, got the problem sorted though before it could even begin to truly develop.

Otherwise, I would have probably needed a knee replacement right about now.

I had my foreskin removed when I was 9. The surgery had me under local anaesthetic so it didn't hurt a bit. However, once the drugs wore off, I was in a world of pain for the next month or so. Every thing, from peeing to walking, hurt like hell.

If words were wisdom, I'd be talking even more.
