Xiu Qiong Duan, 68, told the SINA Beijing news agency she woke up in the middle of the night to find the snake clinging to the wall of her bedroom.

"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound ... at first I thought it was thieves" she said.

"I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw."

Ms Duan, from Suining in southwest China, said she then grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death.

She reportedly preserved its body in a bottle of alcohol which she gave to the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.

Snake expert Long Shuai said the discovery of the creature, which is 40cm long and the thickness of a little finger, was "truly shocking".

"We won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy," she said.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to welcome our future reptilian overlords.

Besides it's not too hard to believe, a lot of animals got stupid mutations all the time. What makes this significant is that the way the lady described it implied that it was actually making use of it's mutation, most animals just die due to complications or in the case of small mutations like this, don't use them at all.

That's a suprsingly well developed claw for something that doesn't have arms or legs.
Perhaps this is a future mutation that will make the snakes adapt to something different?

Evolution doesn't work that way. Any set of mutations vast enough to give birth to an entire hand would have practically zero chances of success and it would almost certainly be lethal to the individual.

If this story is authentic, it could be just a deformity that looks like a hand. Alternatively, it could be an ancestral remnant hand that normally doesn't develop, but this time something went wrong. For instance, chickens (or ducks, not sure) have been known to grow teeth when a certain gene is blocked from functioning.

Evolution is much too slow to allow us to see entire vertebrate hands grow out of nothing.
