It's the phosphate fertilizer they use, which the pot most people buy is probably grown in too. As far as tobacco being a carcinogenic without smoking, I wouldn't doubt that, some of the saliva from chewing is undoubtedly going to make its way inside the lungs. As far as weed goes, it generally goes to your lungs or stomach, I've never heard of someone taking a dip of pot before.
Another thing stoners confuse is tobacco vs. cigarette. Tobacco itself is relatively harmless if grown organically, look at the Native Americans or Castro, or even George Burns. All smoked tobacco and Castro is 80+, Burns died at 100 or so, and Native Americans lived a fairly long time huffing on the peace pipe until Europeans came. Cigarettes have a butt-load of chemicals added to them so they store longer and so they don't dry out as quickly, it's the chemicals that really do you in, I even got a lecture on it in the 8th grade by my music teacher who use to be a chemical analyst.
