3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsOn Friday at work my mom and her work associate saw these two baby squirrels outside her work. They were abandoned, their mother was nowhere in sight and it looked like they were going to die. According to my mom, one had a bloody nose. So yeah, things looked bad for them. I bet their mom became a road pancake or something. :(
So anyways. My mom ended up feeling sorry for them and helping them, along with her work friend. She ended up taking one home, her work associate took the other one for herself. She gave the little guy to my sister as a pet. Really, the little guy is adorable but I'm not so sure keeping him as a pet is a good idea. When I held him in my hand he kept biting me. It didn't hurt or anything, but if he keeps biting it's going to hurt a hell of a lot more as he gets older.
So Newgrounds, what do you think? Is keeping this for a pet a good idea?
Here's a picture.

Honestly, they start of biting you a lot, bit like a dog, but I'm sure they'll mellow out as you tame them as much as possible.
This too will pass.
Memento mori
Keep him, hopefully he won't bite you later on in life and give you rabies.
THIS IS JUST AMAZING!!! KEEP IT!!! How many people can truly say that i have a squirrel as a pet??? Epic....
It'll be hard to keep one of those as a pet, it hasn't got any tame blood inside it, it's natural for squirrels to run from humans and while it being a baby will be easier for you to get it used to humans it won't help it when it's older and at it's sexual peak. It'll want to escape and will and because it has no experience foraging or how to avoid predators it will quickly die somehow.
You're probably best taking it to a vets or a local rescue centre as they will know what the best thing to do in this situation is. It's a lovely idea and very nice of you guys but it's just too wild to keep.

I hope so. This is a really cool pet, it would be a shame to have to throw it outside when it gets older because it wouldn't stop biting.
Here's a picture of me holding him.

Why would you want one of those as a pet?
They're like fucking rats.
Would taking it to see a vet resul in it being given to some sort of animal care home? Because if not, take it to a vet to get clean and vaccinated etc and then keep it as a pet and raise it cos it will eventually warm to you and stop biting, probably the only reason it bites is because it's nervous out of it's mind right now after what it's gone through.
But, if you aren't going to see a vet with it i would seriously consider giving it to a care home like the RSPCA or something cos it could really give you a disease or it might not survive past infancy.

What's wrong with rats?

I see you're not bothering to reply to my post. I still hope though that you have read and understood it. Because while having a pet squirrel may seem cute now in reality, in the future it won't be, and the only thing you'll be doing is ensuring that creatures early death. I don't want to come across as mean but you need to understand this.

Oh sorry Gagsy, I was going to reply but sort of forgot. I didn't mean to ignore you. Anyways, I actually did tell my mom what you said and she told me to basically shut up. I sort of want to get it to a place with professionals that can handle it, ill try and convince my mom to do so.

That was a cool paint over. What did you use to make that? Photo shop?

No worries, it wasn't about ignoring me, just the content of my post. I don't want to come off as big headed but I know a fair bit about animals and their behavior and shit.
Hopefully your mum is just smitten with the cute baby at the moment and will come to her senses in due course. Maybe if you can get her to just phone a vet about the situation, maybe she'll realise after speaking to them what is best.

Yeah, Didn't know I had it on here until after I made that first picture of mine in the photoshop asian face thread, thats why the second one is pimped out. Now I just wanna use it everywhere!

I say take it day by day if he is full grown and still has bad habits, then release him. But, he may not be able to be released since he was domesticated as a baby.
Also, LOOK HOW CUTE IT IS!
Bring him to animal rescue, they actually know what they're doing, unlike you in your situation. I'm not insulting you or anything, but I can confidently say that you haven't dealt with squirrels extensively.

Good idea. I'm also a bit worried about the things safety. I've got like, two cats in my house.

They're possible to be kept as a pet, sure, but wild squirrels might have problems.
Give him to an animal shelter or something.
yeah but they only live for about 7 years....so sad huh.
I would actually keep one of those for pets. i have had a lot of unusual pets over the years (rats, mice, rabbits, and even a bat), so I would actually keep it. Altho, like Gagsy and some others have said, it may be too wild to get tame in later years. Squirrels and Raccoons I hear are the hardest animals to tame, and even when they are "tame" they will still go wild sometimes.
Just don't let it get loose. If it does, it may contract rabies, and come back to you for revenge. Then you'll have to pull an Old Yeller and shoot it behind the tool shed.

Sigh, second time I've screwed up on a link.
I meant THIS video.
What happens when you get a anxious son, a free spirited borderline insane mom, and a possibly rabies induced squirrel? you get a HILARIOUS SHOW ABOUT 3 MIXMATCHED PERSONALITYS TOGETHER IN ONE HOME! 3 NUTS IN A SHELL WEDNESDAYS ON FOOOOX!
thats the cutest thing ever!

It's selfish to keep a wild animal as a pet.
Any animal that would escape from an open door/window and not return is an animal that should not be kept as a pet.
quick destroy them.
things like that are what destroys us

Apparently if they've been abandoned they won't try and escape. As a young animal their instinct is to stay with their mother figure, if their real one leaves and a human takes its place they don't care, apparently.
