This week, my english teacher gave the class an assignment for our parents. Basically, they were to write something about their child, and then email it to him. If they did that, we get an extra credit homework 100, so I figured there could be no harm in telling my mom.

Today, I was cleaning out her computer and found the essay she wrote.

Five short years ago, Billy was a completely different child. Not just in stature, nor his slight facial hair,nor the maturity in his voice. Billy blew through a room like a storm, barely ever touching the floor. He leapt from couch to table to countertop, leaving a wake of thousands of little legos in his path. Homework was a tedious chore completed in 5 minute increments. I set the timer, and once it rang, he launched himself from the kitchen chair.

My family thought I didn't discipline him. Everyone thought he needed a good beating. And, no one had patience. Not my parents. Not the teachers. And, not his father. Like many families in the same situation, my marriage came apart. During my divorce, Billy was diagnosed with high-functioning autism. While Billy doesn't want to believe it nor acknowledge it, he has, indeed, fought his hardest to overcome it. He has made incredible strides over the past few years, having learned independence and responsibility. Most impressive is his recent ability to show caring towards other people. While this may not sound significant to most, his lack of empathy for others was one of the most difficult things for a mother to handle. I read a brief paragraph in Newsday a short time ago that said some children outgrow autism. I choose to believe that can be possible for Billy.

Billy has gone from school to school. Sometimes out of necessity. Sometimes by choice. His elementary school experience made me think I had a terrible child. Only when I placed him in private school did I hear that the sky was the limit for him. While he has flourished in the private school setting, one thing has remained the same no matter how far he's come. That is why he sits in your classroom today.

Billy started in the ___ school system this September. He spent the last three years at Mercy High School. No matter how developmentally advanced he is today compared to those five years ago, he can't seem to overcome the one part of his disability that plagues him the most. Billy has difficulty socially. His first year at McGann-Mercy, he touched, poked, and pushed his way into other children's lives. The following year, he played jokes and did anything for a laugh. In his last year, he became controversial. The small setting that at one time had been the most advantageous part of attending a private school was now his worst nightmare. Kids can be cruel and unforgiving. No one was willing to forget the Billy that once was. Because of that, he had no friends. Only virtual friends he found on the internet in his world of building computers. This year represents a fresh start for Billy. An opportunity for him to meet new kids and forge new friendships with other kids who will only know him for the way he is today.

Only last year did I learn how gifted Billy is with words. His mathematical and scientific talents were apparent at a very young age. He has overcome his inability to understand figures of speech and literal interpretations of common expressions. Like most teenagers, he tests to see what he can get away with, losing points in his average for missed homework, but not much more.

I hope to hear from you if there is ever a problem, but I also hope to hear that he is getting along with other students, smiling, and laughing. There is no magical school. Billy brings with him a problem he cannot run away from. I only hope far fewer problems lie ahead and that he can finally realize his dream of having a best friend.

This essay was submitted to my english teacher, a person who will be influenced by reading this, and have to greet every day, fulling knowing he thinks I'm autistic.

Let me clarify my autism to the best of my memory. When I was little, I was a chore to take care of. Similar to those kiddies you see in Walmart screaming because they can't get a toy. But I grew out of it, like all children do. During the divorce, I was taken to quite a few psychiatrists, and remember taking IQ-like tests many times. Every time, a different psychiatrist told me I had something different wrong with me. This was done for two main reasons:
1) My mom could get more child support if there was something wrong with me and
2) her family continued to tell her I was a problem child.

I was diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Asbergers, and Autism. Each shrink refuted the previous' diagnosis, and the "official" outcome was that I was autistic, most likely because that was the last psych I went to. Between the age of 8 and 11 I was on a multitude of medications for one or two of these conditions at any given time. None of them did anything.

My personal opinion on social disorders: they can't be diagnosed. Every human being interprets people and communicates differently. To call someone disabled because they act slightly different from a loosely interpreted social norm is ridiculous; the fact that I was called 4 different things by 5 different shrinks just reinforces this. "Fighting a condition", no. Growing and a maturing is just a bit more likely. I firmly believe there's nothing wrong with me, and that's not denial. Facts you can deny, opinions you can choose to disagree with.

I don't want to go into detail about Catholic school, but to summarize: I was weird for two years, then I wasn't, but no one respected me because of the first impression.

The question through all of this is, am I right in being disgusted with my mother? And how can I possibly think the same of her, or even face her again when she thinks so, so lowly of me?

Honestly, there's not much you can do. To be honest, being called Autistic isn't like Schizophrenic where people are looking out for a set of behaviours. Autistic is such a general term, you could probably just carry on what you usually do with no problem at all. If the teacher holds some common sense, he/she will just carry on as though it's nothing.

Just take things as they come and be happy you get some home-work credit crap.

I think she's a bitch for telling a person who's a complete stranger to her (but not to you) that you're some sort of retard that has to be dealt with.

Also, i've read the whole thing and i don't think your mothers thinks lowly of you. She's just worried, like all mothers are and all the diagnoses of the shrinks and your family talking to your mother about you just influenced her.

This little piece of text i quoted shows that your mother does care. That she took the time to write that also shows that she does care.

Well, it seems like in this letter you're more of a...disabled pet than a son. :\
It's like she'll congratulate you for every little thing you'll do.
I'd say you should do something extraordinary, to show her that you're not exactly the weak, sensitive boy she sees you to be, and then tell her that you read the letter. Explain how you feel, etc. etc. If I found that my mom wrote this kinda letter to a teacher in my school, I'd be mortified, and I'd say a lot about that.

Only if you feel it necessary. That, or reveal it in a big fight between the two of you, like in soaps.
Realistically:
Confront her steaming angry, and prepare a speech of some sort. I think I would threaten her in some way socially (if this were my mom) to make the speech hit home. The ending is all based on what you feel should be done though.
