i find it hard to remember peoples names, on other forums i jsut match the avatars to the posts, but it's vary hard witht hese stupid preset avatars that i fail to understand.

I could see people abusing a custom avatar feature. I like these level icons. Just keep being a member and using the forums - you'll eventually recognise people by their name, rather than their level icon.

They're not "avatars," they're level icons. Go to any forum hosted by ProBoards.com and you'll see the exact same concept in use - Newgrounds is just more creative with the images they use.
