1. Have you used a Mac

Yes

2. If you answered yes to the first question, when?

3. Why do you hate macs?

I don't really hate them, it's annoying to get used to, and I just can't stand the one button mouse

Of course... you know those multi-button mice, can never trust 'em. How does it feel to put your ass in front of your mouth? Darwin is very secure.

you actually can upgrade your cpu, hard drive and ram yourself without voiding your warranty.
for laptops, imacs and mac minis. The mac pro is almost fully upgradable the same as a desktop.

Macs? DAMN SOMETHING IN MY COMPUTER EXPLODED GUESS I'LL HAVE TO CALL TECH SUPPORT.

isn't that the same for all brand name computers like Dell, Compaq and etc.

Macs are just computers. I don't prefer them because they cost significantly more to do the same thing.

Not a big fan of the operating system either.

The machine I built for $1800 would cost over $3400 if I built a similar Mac Pro on Apple.com ... except the Mac Pro would have a slower processor, less memory, slower memory, less storage capacity, much worse video cards, and a slower optical drive that only reads CDs and DVDs

What a deal!!

1. Have you used a Mac
2. If you answered yes to the first question, when?
3. Why do you hate macs?

1. Yes
2. Friday
3. Overly expensive, my school bought brand new Macs that were about 3grand each. I can crash them with the post it note widget. Almost everyone I have seen who owns a mac tell me how im a horrible person because I use windows, and talk about how they are so much better.

Because they're overpriced, mostly. I also just don't like their OSs very much. I used to have one of the older Macs, I think it was Mac OS 8.0, and then I switched to Windows, which I continue to use. I just never really found Mac OS X and everything since that to really be that great. The Windows OS layouts just seemed more intuitive to me.

Yes.

2. If you answered yes to the first question, when?

On a plethora of occasions.

3. Why do you hate macs?

They're overpriced and have very inferior hardware. They're a fashion accessory for fuck's sake.

You can't do anything natively on it, run programs, play games, etc, except those specifically for OSX.

People buy them because they think they're fucking virus proof and almighty, when in reality, they're not, they just cost way too fucking much.

Windows doesn't run anything natively that isn't made for Windows, Linux is the same (with the exception WINE) so that's something both shared and accepted.

Sure, no prob.

Taken from the Mac Pro (Quad Core) configuration page

2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon*
8gb (4x2gb) 1066MHz DDR3*
640GB hard drive
2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB
18x SuperDrive (CD/DVR burner)
No display/additional software

$3,399

*The quad core Xeon they're talking about is actually the server variant of the Core i7 940, which supports dual processor configurations and error correcting memory. I'm not sure why they do this, because 1) This isn't a dual processor configuration. The amount of money wasted here is HUGE, and 2) Error correcting memory is slower and more expensive. Memory errors are actually extremely rare and typically used in enterprise environments where they don't want to take even the tiniest chance

Something in the ballpark of my configuration: (I'll take most of the prices from newegg.com, although lower prices are guaranteed to be found if you do sufficient searching)

2.66gHz Intel Core i7 920*
$279.99
2x NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260 896mb $378.98 (Not including $40 rebate)
640gb hard drive (7200rpm like the mac) $69.99
12gb (2 3x2gb kits) 1600MHz DDR3 $239.98
Upper-end X58 chipset motherboard $219.99 (Not including $15 rebate)
22x CD/DVD burner $30.99
750W corsair power supply $119.99 (Not including $10 rebate)

(Items below are subject to personal preference. Cost estimates are generous)

Decent CPU cooler: $50
Keyboard and mouse: $50
Decent case/fans: $100
Windows: $200 (As a CS student at my university, this was actually free)**
Shipping: $50

* Adjust BIOS settings in motherboard to run the processor 100% stable at 3.6GHz+ (Many enthusiasts get 4.0GHz+ just on air cooling)
** Operating system is your choice. Subtract cost if you want to use a free operating system, of course.

Cost of this system before rebate: $1,790.91
Cost of this system if you bother doing rebates: $1725.91

If you're scared of overclocking for some stupid reason but want the same proc speed as the mac, even though it turns a $200 processor in to a $1000+ processor for free, subsitute the i7 920 with a i7 940 and add $185. (No need for the ~$50 third party cooler if you don't overclock): $1910.91

If you want to use a *nix operating system, most are free. Subtract the $200: $1525.91 (Post rebate with overclocking) or $1710.91 (Post rebate, no overclocking)

The above configuration will leave you with an extra $1,650 (give or take) and will blow the socks off of the Mac Pro (Especially if you're not a newb and overclock). This can be, what, a 30" monitor and a Blu-Ray burner? Or maybe some solid state drives? You could still use the server variants of some aforementioned hardware and still save many hundreds of dollars. Or just build an octo core or something.

yes, error correcting memory plus multi cpu routing does slow down maximum potential.
I believe the mac pros both have the same motherboard so you can upgrade to dual cpus later.
The motherboard has 4 PCI-E X16 2.0 slots
4 Firewire 800 ports
6 SATA2 Hard drive ports (not including Super Drives)
8 FB ECC RAM slots on a daughter board
32 GB RAM MAX
dual Gigabit Ethernet

Costs are high simply because this is a Xeon workstation not intended for consumers.
a comparable motherboard would cost about $500-900 CAD.
Another reason for it's high price is that apple's upgrades are in fact very high, you would save alot by buying your upgrades from newegg.

You really can't compare this to the mac since this is like comparing apples to oranges no pun intended.

your CPU is in fact faster
The graphic are better, i dont think apple has SLI, but apple does have openCL
mac's also use WD hard drives at a ripoff price.
chosen slower memory, and 1600MHz is a overclock speed
chosen motherboad hardly comparable to the mac pro

The mac pro is really for people doing video editing, 3D rendering and etc, most serious 3D animators will tell you to get a Xeon, although the i7 is faster it will slow down after 10hours on extreme load where the Xeon will not. plus the dual xeon will have a bigger benefit with apple's new grand central in snow leopard.

Really the difference in technology and who these computers target market is for is what justifies the costs.

I love my Mac, mainly because I'm in to video editing, photoshop and other creative software. Though I still like Windows, personally I prefer using Mac programs like Final Cut Express.

OSX hacked in 30 seconds
- garageband comprimising security
embedding a keylogger in the apple keyboards!

any more?

I'm writing this on my girlfriends macbook right now, but i own a pc at home.

You dont have to hate them, just use what you prefer.

The only reason i'd have to be against macs is how Microsoft bailed Apple out when they were going bankrupt, and now Apple has made it fucking impossible to be readily compatible with non-mac PC's, due to the format conversions and program differences.

I have a Mac. One of those huge, widescreen Macs. About the only thing good is that it has a large screen and has smooth graphics.
I absolutely hate the filing system, there are no games for it, many useful applications you can have on Windows are translated into crappy Mac programs.
I don't go "Oh no! Firefox and Photoshop crashed! I can get a virus from the internet! I need to use a Mac instead of a PC!"
