Why do some people think the Wii needs one?

What does a hardrive do? I have no idea. All I know is that the 360 has one for 100$ and you need it to play any Original Xbox game that doesn't have Halo in the name.

A Hard Drive is like the heart of your computer/system. It stores everything on it. Images, Videos, Saved Games etc.

A external HD is usually used as a back up. So that if for some reason your default HD dies, you have everything copied onto a second one.

A backup. Useful for the ever-common RROD but, that can't be all that it's for. How does it make it so that a 360 owner can play the butchered remake of the game of my childhood?

I don't see why you would need a hard drive to play a game unless you either lack space on your current hard drive or don't have one to begin with. Anyways 120 GB is a lot considering that's around 6-7 installed games and some downloaded games and accounts to go with it. Also you could just take the hard drive to a friends house and not the xbox.

Is that good enough for you?

NOTE: if you're not seeing the image like this, then it is because your computer is possessed. You will need force a reload of the internet's lifeline, or kill it completely.

Hard drives store data. In lamest terms, its like a really big memory card, capable of holding all kinds of data. Its really hard when owning a 360 not to have one.

Some people think the Wii needs one because it would allow developers to update and patch their games on the Wii. It would also be more convenient to expand your Wii's memory. What you CAN do is store data on SD cards, but theyre not nearly as big. The Wii is cheap for a reason.

Um...no, the CPU is main component that makes computers "work". But I guess since some people say the CPU is the brain then the HDD can be the heart...

Some people say the wii needs an HDD so it can store more games and developers can patch games without worrying about the wii's space limits.

Hmm...

let's get some biological-computer metaphors in here.

RAM, is the muscles of the computer, helps it go faster.
CPU, this is where all the ifnormation gets processed, the brain of the computer
Hard Drive, this is the memory, both metaphorically and literally.
The Fan helps to cool the computer, somewhat like the lungs?
The PSU (power supply unit), is the heart of the computer, it keeps it going.

anything else?

The Case, it's the computers skin.

I actually heard Conker Live and Reloaded was pretty good, I mean, in all honesty, it only scored 1.0 less then BFD, and that's mostly because of the passage of time.

Hard drives are like memory cards on steroids. They can store more memory than a memory card, and let you do a couple of things you wouldn't be able to do with a memory card, like upload music and movies.

Really, though, anything that can add more memory to the Wii's admittedly wimpy internal memory is cool with me.

Alright, so a hardrive is a super memory card capable of things other than storing save data, but there's one piece of the puzzle I'm still not getting.

How is it that the hardrive, a super memory card, allows a 360 to play Original Xbox games?

Review scores? Don't you DARE use IGN as a way to tell which games are good. Remakes are supposed to improve the game, like the Resident Evil Remake did. Conker Live and Reloaded may be the worst remake ever, as it just kept taking away and replacing the things we love.

But it's not the game, it's what happenned to the company after the original that pisses me off, and tears a hole in my heart.

There are some wounds in life, that cannot be healed.

The 360 uses software emulation. The emulator is installed on the harddrive just like all of your computer's applications are installed onto your computer's harddrive. If there's no harddrive, the emulator can't be installed.

Are you saying that Original Xbox games are treated as software, uploaded from their discs? Games like Conker: Shitty Sequel would be playable afterwards and you don't need the disc? I don't think that can be right. Can it? Xbox games treated like PC games?

Gustavos! You own a PS3, you should know what a hard drive is, well for the 360, its quick and changeable, like a memory card just much bigger, PS3 hard drives are changeable as well, but I think you have to take it apart...

HDDs are what they're called on PS3, I know. Super memory cards, but I'm trying to figure out this MYSTERY of how these things can make it so an Xbox 360 can play games from it's not-so-old ancestor.
