why is the pen mightier than the sword? Surely the sword stands for action and the pen for words. Unless someone were to take action with a pen, of course, then clearly you would defeat all.

Because the action of writing is stronger then talking about writing.

I think that the sword represents violence while the pen represents subterfuge, or criticism. Whether or not that makes it mightier I'm not sure.

If the pen will represent criticism, surely that would only be mightier in the sense you're helping the aggressor!

If I cut off your head with a sword, you cannot write your words.

If you write your words, I'll still cut off your head with my sword, but crying.

Yes, it's obvious that the person who came up with the phrase was a writer. He probibly got the shit beaten out of him a lot when he was a kid too.

Saying the pen is mightier than the sword is subjective. Personally I believe the sword is mightier, as it has a more powerful effect on humanity and the individual. With the advent of computers, the pen isn't used for worldwide communication much anymore, so it's not very powerful, and even if it was, the sword still wins.

The sword is generally shitter though, because it's a tool for killing, and killing, in most circumstances, is a horrible thing.

Subterfuge, criticism, and vitriolic language have killed more men than the sword ever could.

The intent behind "actions are stronger than words" is clearly implying words are inaction.

This is false.

It's simply how those words are used.

depends on what you trying to do

are you trying to draw a picture, use the damn pen

are you trying to solve any situation between two people or two groups of people?

violence will solve it faster than your damn pen will

I can't help but think that you haven't thought this through.

Violence begets violence. There's no real way for us to ever move past the use of violence if it's the be-all-end-all answer for conflict resolution.

The sword serves only as a reminded to posterity of consequence, whereas the pen enlightens posterity as to the lesson learned from the experience.

The difference is taken to meant over a length of time. Actions vs. words is an instantaneous adage. Pen vs. sword is a social and cultural adage. Religious texts and important works of writing including the Constitution easily outstrip the scope of a single sword's capacity for violence. Each sourced from one pen.

ink + sword = pen

not as precise as a pen, but still kills

If it takes two things, the ink and the sword to equal one pen than the pen would be mathematically greater than the sword.

That's pretty deep thinking man. I understand actions are stronger than words, but I never got the whole pen is mightier than the sword thing, it doesn't make much sense to me. These philosopher dudes should really make up their mind.
