Purchase some sort of shared/split license for a VST?
I really want to buy Nexus2, but it's crazy expensive, so I was thinking about going halfers on it with the guy I make music with. If we each paid for half of it, would we each be allowed to install it on our own personal computers and not infringe any copyright issues?
I know with some programs (like...Norton Antivirus) you're allowed to "install this software onto __ number of computers", do VST's work like that too?
Not sure if anyone would know the answer to this, but I just thought of it and now I'm super curious :)
Piss off if you're gonna flame Nexus....I LIKE IT, OKAY?

I've skimmed through the Refx site a bit, but I couldn't fine license stuff on there. I suggest sending them an email asking this, as I have no idea how else you'd get to know that.
As for flaming nexus... The only reason to flame it would be in case you're just going to use presets without any personal creativity involved. Nexus can act as a great tool, can be used originally, if you just take time to tweak it where possible.
funny how I said more off-subject than on-subject.

There are no shades of legality here.
To the OP:
I doubt the license would allow something like this. Generally a single license allows a single installation on a single machine. Although, some licenses do allow for multiple installs. I'd say do what mich said and shoot them an email.

Licenses are moving away more from single installation on single machine to one instance of the installation being in use at any one time - programs like cubase, record and such are using USB keys, meaning you can install the software wherever you like but only use it one place at a time.

This was kind of my thought on the situation as well. If there's some way you can "transfer" the license between you...I dunno...maybe it would work? It would be kind of annoying though :P
Anyway, as other swell chaps have mentioned, I think it would be incredibly prudent to send them an email first.

When I wanted to purchase Nexus I just went down to the company offices and took all my clothes off. They were so impressed by my chiselled abs and rock hard pecs that they gave me all their programs free and even let me fuck the women.

it's not technically legal no. Very few companies will have a group rate deal and even so it's doubtful they would sell the value of one license to two people.
The install on ___ number of machines part is for the composer's convenience if they have a multi pc setup you're not technically allowed to install on your pc and your buddies pc and both legally use it.
Though you could always say you own your buddies pc :D!!!
All things considered good on you guys for buying the thing.

Thanks for all the responses on this question everyone!
To be honest, I'm doubtful that I'd be able to get a slit license, it would be nice though :)
As for emailing them, thanks so much for suggesting that. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that :P
I'lll let you know what they say ;)

Depends on the company, but most of the time, no. Single Licenses have been alliow for multiple installs like people in this thread have said, but it still is only FOR YOU.
Most libs you cannot share, or allow anyone to even use the software/samples unless they also have a license. You cannot "rent out" your studio for that purpose.

Nexus2 needs a USB Licence thingy with it, so yeah it's probably similar to the stuff Khuskan said.

Yeah they have a so called 'Dongle', so like people said, you can install it on several PC's. But only use it at one at a time. ( Don't even try pirating another dongle )
