Yes, I like to plan this well in advance. I only have a Wii (which I never use) and am finally considering getting either the PS3 Slim or the 360 Elite due to their new, low prices. But oh bother, which one?
well, it depends on what games you like. if you want games like MGS4, uncharted, and more PS3.
If you want boring, repetitive 1st and 3rd person shooters with kids yelling at you the whole time, 360.

Just look at the exclusives for each console and choose which one suits you more. I got the PS3 because the exclusives they have suit me more and the controllers are 100000 times better in my opinion, but the XBOX 360 is good. They are both very similar actually, either one you get, you will not get disappointed.

Halo = Don't care for
Gears = Don't care for
MGS4 = Looks good
Uncharted = Seems pretty interesting
LBP = Holy crap I've wanted a game like this my whole life.
Depends on the games you want.
Halo 3, Gears of War, Dead or Alive series, Forza Motorsport, Fable 2 and a shit load of awesome Arcade Games = 360
Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Infamous, MGS4 and free online = PS3
But if you're looking for a wider range of games then go for the 360, it has more exclusives and all the rest you can get on both consoles anyway. And yeah PS3 does have a better graphics ability but there are few multi-platform games where the graphics are really any different between the 2.

360: Halo 3, Halo ODST, Bioshock 2, Prototype, Assassin's Creed, and Arkham Asylum.
If you buy an Elite, I hear they don't red ring but I myself am not made of enough money to risk it, I hear the Slims are going to be pretty cheap but they scream "Break me" as well. I'd hold onto that money for a little while until heavy-hitters like GoW3, Gears Of War 2, Prototype, Arkham, and Bioshock 2 are out just to see how they may adapt and modify it. You don't want to get screwed on the first-generation line either.
They've both got viable exclusives.
However, you have to note that the majority of games that you'll want to buy will likely be multi-platform games.
