greedy bastards, really.

Because the people who download thousands of songs will probably be the techno-savvy types who are smart enough to use I.P. blockers and similar software to make it difficult to detect them. Whereas Mr Only Downloaded a Few Songs Guy used to protection and was easily found.

I'd like to remind you all:

Discussing illegal activities - including, but not limited to: ROMs, cracks, warez and hacking.

And now I'm going to delete anything actually talking about doing anything... feel free to debate moral stuff, but keep this all at a high level. Any mention of sites, methods etc will get your post deleted.

Illegally downloading music really is wrong. If you're "up to your neck in college," guess what? You don't need to get your music! But, the fines that people are getting is just ridiculous.

I understand that they're trying to get the message out: that downloading music CAN get you into trouble. And obviously, they're dropping huge globs of punishment onto just a few people so that it will be thoroughly covered in the news. But that's bullcrap! They're smart people, certainly they can come up with a way to get this message out:

If you download music illegally, you may be charged a few hundred dollars!

Just that will stop just about everybody. =)

Oh yes, and something else I forgot to mention:

There are many, perfectly legal ways to listen to music without having to pay for it. And I'm sure you know about most of them already. Which really makes me wonder why I'm having to mention it:

http://www.pandora.com/ It plays like a radio station, only you get to choose what kind of music you want. If you have good picking-skill, you can really discover some great new stuff.

http://downloads.khinsider.com/kingdom-h earts This site is awesome, sure it's only video game music. But on the plus side: it's video game music!

http://www.youtube.com/ Um, duhhhh!

Everyone downloads music, it's just sad to see that they finally took action upon this on this individual.

Youtube occasionally licenses with the Music Industry to get music on their pages. They've had squabbles over advertising profits, so not everything is allowed up there anymore, but sometimes it is legal.

Youtube is also competing with millions of uploaders. Try as they might, there's gonna be a video of Freebird on there somewhere all the time.

They do get annoying when they nick music from a video that relies on it as part of the flow. Many a good WoW video was cut with the music in mind and playing it mute would kill the feel.

The other day I did a purge of a load of pirated songs. It's not worth paying so much you can buy for $1.30 anyway.

I think it would be more beneficial for the companies if they started charging a lot more people a lot less money. If tons of people were getting charged $100 or $200 I wouldn't want to download because the chances of me getting caught are way more.

Actually, you're right, it is a great place to get music for free. I use it often :3.

Now onto the subject at hand.

The way they are going about trying to stop piracy is just plain bad. It's similar to that case involving a woman downloading 9 songs and getting fined millions. They're getting 2 out of millions people that download stuff that has 20x more value. While it may cause the average Joe to think twice, any frequent pirate (which is probably making up most of those millions) knows the chances of anyone getting any trace of their deeds is slim.

NOTE: if you're not seeing the image like this, then it is because your computer is possessed. You will need force a reload of the internet's lifeline, or kill it completely.

At most it shouldn't be more than $1000

I'd go and download the 30 songs that he had dne, but I don't have enough space :c
But seriously if they made songs cost a reasonable price, almost no one would pirate anymore. Even with iTunes, they completely take out the cost of the CD's and covers, so it shouldn't cost more than 10c for a song. A $1 is fucking overpriced for a 3-4 minute song.

Imo, all electronic downloads like game DLC, or movies, that are digitally stored, should be 50-75% cheaper than buying a physical copy, because then you don't get a casing or a CD or anything, and it's pure profit from buying digitally, so it should definetly cost less because there isn't any cost for manufacturing.

Exactly.

As far as I'm aware the people who download songs illegally know the right places to do so and how to protect themselves. It's the guys who haven't a clue and probably google "download songs for free" or something and just follow that. They're bound to get caught.

no, it isn't. It's to stop people like us from doing shit like that. They could probably catch 1000 people a day downloading tracks, but they don't. They make an example of a random criminal (forgive me, but technically, thats what anyone would be in this case) and fine him an extraordinary amount of money compared to a market value...

this is so people don't do it, because who the fuck wants to get fined for $600k, I wouldn't even have that much if I sold my motherfucking house

i wonder what program he used that would get him caught.

I know of programs like L!mew!re and stuff but I never bothered using those because can't your ISP inform record labels/movie companies/etc?

just rip songs off youtube or imeem, they have no way of knowing you did it.

Once I am out of college and have a well paying job I would never download music but why shouldn't I be able to enjoy the music I like if I would not be able to buy it any way? If you have the money and you are able to buy it then I think it's wrong but if you are not able to buy it exactly who are you hurting by downloading it? I really think the artist would just be happy to know that so many people love there music. I don't think you go into the music business to make a lot of money because it is unlikely you will succeed. Is it the artists themselves or is it the corporations that are so evil?

Think of how many files are illegally downloaded each day, millions. a single person may not affect a multi-million corporation but together it makes a big difference. thats why when someone does eventually get snared they don't get paid the market price, they get PUNISHED.

the law says don't steal, and what do you call piracy? theft.

Im not saying I find this sort of thing morally wrong, as I of all people break internet laws every hour god sends. But if you are going to steal, or break any law for that matter, you must be ready for the consequences.

Why do you think they build fences around the slums in New Delhi? They're trying to keep away the paparazzi which comes due to the large amount of musicians moving there, because of pirating.

I have 2,000+ songs on this computer with more to come once Muse releases its newest album and I finish torrenting this experimental techno crap. Come get some, RIAA.

It is not stealing there is nothing physically at loss. You are sharing a copy of a ripped CD someone still has to buy it. I also think this is wrong if you have the money to buy the CD but if you can't buy the CD anyways then you are not hurting anyone by downloading it.

People like you are the reason this man has to pay so much money. Like I keep saying if you have the money it is wrong to not support the author. A good artist puts a lot of themselves into there art. If you like them support them. A lot of these rich artists deserve to be rich.
