It seems outrageous to think that software that was created nearly 40 years ago could still be in use in some form or other right now, but there you have it. It's a testament to the forethought and whatnot of the guys who developed that software.

For those of you who're interested, Newgrounds runs on Debian.

No real point to any of this, just thought it'd be of interest and mark a milestone in the computing calendar.

Wow, 40 years, Unix is older than me.
Anyway Happy Birthday Unix!

Though I can't wait to see what happens when it gets old and senile.

Happy birthday Unix! I find it very interesting that quite a lot of the technology we use is still based off of such old things.

The Unix epoch is the time 00:00:00 UTC on January 1 1970

Aside from that, this thread reminds me of how sexy sounding the word epoch is. Say it slowly and softly, eeeepoch it rings in the ear and raises the hair....rawr >:]

As I recall the Unix based operating systems were the first standardized OS, made for distribution. I prefer any *nix OS to mac or windows(vista, cuz XP is pretty nice). But, hey, happy birthday!!!

You do know Mac is "*nix", yeah?

That's only true to a certain extent. Mac is based off of Unix. And it's not like Mac is just a seperate distro of unix. it's a lot different. Well, this is coming from what i've heard. I've never used a mac except for a few times in middle school. But, it is usually hated by just about everyone who uses Opensource operating systems. Mostly because that they charge for their operating system. anyways, yeah.

What? Unix isnt free either... Also RedHat now charge as well the reason CentOS exists as well as being a good distro is because RedHat decided they were gonna start charging people subscriptions...

Mac is not *nix because it has been registered in the single unix specification

And why would you want to hate someone for selling an operating system. They have to eat too you know.

Well I'm glad you speak for everyone who uses an open source OS. I spent the last year or so only using Linux, but I have no problem at all with Windows or OS X. I recently acquired and old used iBook with OS X Leopard and I have to say it's wonderful.

I hate closed minded people like you.

Truthfully, I have always believed that UNIX is an excellent OS base. The only operating system I have ever known to not use the UNIX kernel was Windows (well, and DOS). As it turns out, Windows is kind of unstable and slow (relative to the UNIX systems). The funny thing is, UNIX is older than either the DOS or the NT kernels. Being that this is so, UNIX undoubtedly should be considered the greatest operating system kernel in the history of computers.

Please send me a private message if you saw and liked my sig.

There are more than three kernels in this world
Those are just the mainstream implementations, but there are people that make kernels for fun (I personally know someone), for smartcards etc

As it turns out, Windows is kind of unstable and slow (relative to the UNIX systems).

Windows is not inherently unstable and slow, it eventually ends up that way due to your actions as a user, tons of programs installed and so forth.
Also UNIX based systems can be just as unstable. I once installed ubuntu studio and I think I closed it the proper way 5 times tops (kept hanging when I surfed the web)
