For the first six weeks we have to learn how to type "properly", which means that you have your fingers on the "home row" keys. Those are the asdf and jkl; keys. And instead of using only your index and middle finger to type all your letters, you use every finger. It's supposed to make you type faster, but I think it's bullshit.
So do you guys type "properly" or do you just use your index and middle finger, and thumbs for the space bar?

Sounds retarded to me, I can probably type faster than the teacher.
It comes naturaly and every person has his own special way of doing it.
Which ever is more comfortable for you.
I use my index and middle finger and sometimes my ring finger. I go pretty fast.
I wish I started touch-typing when I first started using the computer. I tried learning it a few months ago but I keep going back to my lazy method.
Touch-typing allows you to type fast and without looking at the keyboard.
My signature was old so I changed it.
Also i use my two fingers and and my thumbs...might sound slow but i move em fast.
But i guess it would be cool to type with all your fingers.
When I type, I mostly use my index finger and my ring finger. It just seems more natural that way. (to myself, of course)
But when I'm at work, I have to type properly. It's supposed to show the poeple who get their permits that we're fancy people, or some bullshit like that.
Bounce Bounce Jiggle Bounce :3
I suppose it's just a more efficient way of using the keyboard, maybe a bit uncomfortable and seemingly unnecessary, but it could be helpful when you become familiar with it.
I don't use procedure.. I just let my fingers follow any random path to the keys i need to hit. works pretty well for me, although i often make mistakes because of it.
Edit option FTW
I used to only type by using my fingers and looking. I knew about homerow for years but ignored it. Finally, my teacher forced me to use it in a typing class and now I'm a pretty fast and accurate typer without looking at the keys for guidance. It takes some practice, but it really is more efficient, trust me.
If I don't have full use of my hands, I'll use the one or two-finger method. But usually I stick with homerow. I learned home row before I even had a computer. Man, those were some crazy days.

I don't believe there is any way to type "properly." In fact, there is nothing that can be done properly, things are done conveniently. "Properly" is just another method of the corporations trying to turn us all into identical, consumer zombies. Do what you feel is comfortable. If someone tells you otherwise, tell them they can stick their "proper" way up their ass.
I normally just type using my index fingers. I find it faster than typing any other way.
I'm on Last.fm!
Also, I used to be YeOldeSierra. Now I'm just Sierra :3

I agree with this guy. The only "proper" way is YOUR way.
I type with all my fingers but I don't use a home row. But it's from being on a computer so much it's hard to be comfortable with what I do. I can use home row but I can peck and not look at the keyboard so I'd rather not.
You could really go for a chocolate chip cookie right about now...
Meh, Side for the shift button (I use my little finger) I really only use my middle, index, and ring finger.
Please disregard all of my pre-2013 posts. I was young and borderline retarded.
Homerow... homo? I use homo... homo is ass jk? What?
Whatever... +1 post count. LEVEL UP! + 10 cool points. ePeen size increased. Luck With Women - 100.
John Rambo is my hero
I type pretty fast and I don't even know about the "proper" way. I don't use my thumbs and my index finger does near enough all of the work with my pinkies on the buttons like ctrl, assuming im not using my other hand for something else.
I learned the home-row system in elementary school. What took your district so damn long?
Anyway, I find it easier to type home-row style, but that's because it's how I learned it. It's how a keyboard is "supposed" to be used since the age of typewriters. But I still have to look at the keyboard to see what I'm doing, which technically puts me behind the average person.
I never learned to type properly. I type perfectly fine.
I can type only 30 wpm using the home row, but i have developed a method using
awdv ( space , space for thumbs) jiop. I can do upwards of 90 wpm using my developed method that i have been using for most of my life,
It gives me much quicker access to the most common keys rather then gh;y those i rarly use,

That is interesting. I'd probably try to learn it if I weren't so used to using home row.

I can't imagine how anyone can type with only a couple of fingers. Typing a 10+ page essay would take for fuckin ever.
And to those who say that your way of typing is better, take an online test and see how many WPM (words per minute) you can type. With enough practice, you can type 50-100 words a minute the right way

I type with everything except my thumbs and pinky

That IS very interesting. I've never really thought about how other people type. I always assumed everyone typed with the home-row system. I thought you all had overwhelming likely learned it in school. I started having typing lessons in school when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and then I had them again in 6th grade. It never really occurred to me that any more than a small percentage didn't learn it.
The home-row system is just something you have to learn and practice, like anything else. When I first started learning it I typed at 20 wpm, but it felt natural. Now I type around 70 wpm. The only thing I never tried to learn correctly was using the opposite shift key, that is, using your left pinky for the shift key when your right hand is pressing the letter and vice versa.

I generally use all of my fingers. Sometimes I don't, depending on what I'm typing.
typing with one finger.
Pretty much fun if you just want to kill time.
But if two hands just remember the keyboard.
I've neen using the internet for a while now, and I've learned to use most of my fingers. My fingers have certain keys they press.
I'm just cool like that. But I don't do that "home key" thing.
I love Street Fighter. obviously.
