iPhone & iTouch App for Newgrounds

Over the past few months I've been developing an iPhone & iTouch app for Newgrounds since I have one, and I have seen people posting about one. So I finally finished it up, I would like peoples oppinions.

If everyone thinks its good, I will make a real app and submit it to the apple store.

Oh by the way, how it works is a newgrounds URL is submitted with its corresponding youtube URL(s). The newground URL is spidered for information including the image, description, author, etc. I will approve the video via email, then its put up on the iPhone website (if all the data is correct).

Everything is automated, I just approve whether the links are legit.

So basically, this app works by finding Newgrounds flash movies on youtube and just playing that.

So you are supporting people stealing flash movies and putting them on youtube? Sure it's all well and good if the author puts their own movies there but 99% of the time it isn't them.

Ya dude, audio would make it killer, being that the iPod tough and iPhone are both music players. Be sure to send a PM over my way when you submit it to apple of if you need anything else. I've got an iPod touch so i can give some feedback if you need any.

And on that point again, if iPhone users want to view a newgrounds flash on youtube they could just search it straight away instead of going through this whole approval process thing you seem to have. Also I'm not sure if Tom would really like you stealing the newgrounds formatting for your site..

Yeah, Tom and I were talking about that. He doesn't seem to mind that I'm spidering the website for the information, but he does wonder how to authors are gonna mind the whole youtube thing.

Once and a while I see the authors page on youtube, and sometimes I don't. Like Retarded Animal Babies (Dave), he doesnt have one. But Neurotically Yours has a page.

The youtube pages dont really get spidered, just the link is carried over so the person can click on the link and view them.

The only upside is that you can see if the videos are available by going to this website (and app), rather than searching through all the stuff on youtube.

The Art section could be brought very easily as well. However the Audio section because its encoded in flash, i'm not sure if that can be done. I can look a bit more into adding those things though.

Even so, the videos are being viewed via youtube and not on Newgrounds, so that gives them all the traffic and not Newgrounds, which should rightfully be getting it.

Surely it can't be too hard to get the audio streaming from the download link? I've seen a few tutorials around saying how to do so.

Hopefully adobe will get its ass in gear sometime soon and develop decent flash for mobile phones..

i thought tom and psychogoldfish were working on a newgrounds app. but as hungariansupermarket mentioned yeah we do need to see some tutorials and audio submissions but if i were you u should make a radiogrounds app that could save you a lot of hassle trying to put the audio onto the newgrounds app.

Ok, the Audio Portal and the Art Portal have been added to the app. As well as some code changes.

It loads on an iphone and itouch 10x faster than the original website would. Makes it worth it I think.

I changed it over. You can submit just a video URL, not necessarily a youtube URL. If the author has a youtube page, I would encourage that one be submited. But if you converted it to an MP4 format that works for iPod iTouch, and your hosting it somewhere, thats fine too I suppose. Just don't take credit for the video obviously.

it's not really an application, it's just a web-version.

it's thoughtful you did this, though i won't be using it on my iphone. the only thing that would sell me is the ability to deposit. NG takes FOREVER to load on the iphone browser, and doing it 5 times to deposit is painful.

Right now it is a web app, and it does load 10x faster than the newgrounds website does. I will be making an app (its 90% done right now, I might finish it tonight) and submitting it to apple. It will cost me around $99 but I will make it available for free. I don't want any money for everyone elses hard work, I just personally would like to view newgrounds while im traveling (I travel a lot).

Actually im going to hold back on releasing the app to the apple store for a while. I want to make the actual app itself a little better and more easier to use than the web version. I need to purchase a domain for the web version. You guys got any ideas?
