*NOTE* I did get approval from a mod to make this thread.

Ah, hurricanes, one of Mother Nature's greatest and most beautiful displays of power... and terror.

Continuing Wade's idea from last year, this thread is to help spread awareness for any Newgrounders here who are in the path of this years storms. Seeing as how no storms have formed this season in the Atlantic until now, this is probably the best time for a thread.

My area of Florida has just been hit by the first storm to make landfall this season, Tropical Storm Claudette. The capital city did not get hit as much, but those in Panama City and westward have been drenched with rain. Tropical Storm Ana wasn't really a threat to the contiguous United States, but caused some heavy downpours in Puerto Rico.

The main concern now is Hurricane Bill. Bill is currently a category 2 storm, and while its path (below) may not look too concerning, I still fear that it might do a loop around in the Atlantic, similar to what Hurricane Ivan did in the past.

As Wade said before, everyone is welcome to share their experiences about preparing, evacuating, riding through, and the aftermath of the storm. Pictures of the storms are welcome as well, but be cautious of your own safety if you're taking them on your own.

Which part, because when Hurricane Ike came through last year, parts of St. Louis flooded!

Could we not have any hurricane victim threads this year?

You obviously have been warned about the hurricane. Don't bitch to us if you were too stupid to get your ass out of there.

Yeah dude, It may not be a hurricane when it gets to the midwest, but they're still hellacious thunderstorms. Plus you/my family have tornadoes and shit to worry about. Anyone know if the area around Augusta, Georgia gets affected by hurricanes severely? I moved here about a month ago, and I don't know shit about the place really.

I live on the little red dot, Pinellas County. It's a peninsula that extends off of Tampa. For some reason, we rarely ever get directly hit by hurricanes. There's some scientific explanation as to why (something to do with currents), but nearly every hurricane that comes near us goes south and across the state or north into the panhandle. It's not exactly a safe zone, but in my 15 years living here, we've never been directly hit. We've had some outer bands of hurricanes and tropical storms hit us, but nothing too major. I'm also in one of the few elevated places in my area (Florida is almost entirely flat), so flooding has never been an issue. Usually school gets canceled once or twice a year and we all go to the beach because the projection was way off.

Have a happy hurricane season everyone.

Augusta generally won't be hit directly, as with many cities in norther Georgia. The most you'll get are going to be the outer bands of storms that come through the Carolinas.

Oh, and the names for the next four storms are: Danny, Erika, Fred, and Grace...

So I take it Tallahassee was not too badly hit then? I know someone down there who just had a baby two months ago. Imagine evacuating with a kid that young.

The problem with Bill is no one knows what it's gonna do yet. Weather Underground's models have it possibly hitting the northern states or Canada. It's almost peak hurricane time too, so don't let a calm Atlantic season fool you.

Hurricanes can devastate other areas besides the coast though. Last year, I lived in Ohio, to the southeast of Columbus. Hurricane Ike came through in a "perfect storm" type scenario where it hit a cold front and an upper level disturbance, and this kept it strong enough to stay a Category 1 over Ohio. We had a humongous windstorm, and there were massive power outages everywhere. The power crews that were helping out down in Texas and Louisiana were called back. My power was out for four days. I drove to work the morning after, and I had never seen that much damage in my life. For example, a church steeple came crashing down.

I also have a brief entry in my blog from back then.

Yeah, all Tallahassee got was a few rain showers, and about 20 minutes of actual downpours. This city hasn't had any major hurricane threats since the 1980s. So, I'm sure your friend and their child are doing fine.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure Bill is going to do something more than just float around in the Atlantic. I just hope that, if it comes back around, no one gets hurt.

Whenever someone thinks of Hurricane Katrina, they think of the thousands of lives taken and homes destroyed in New Orleans, but no one seems to remember the atrocity it caused in Miami. All the widespread temporary power-loss and un-air-conditioned homes, the extended school year to make up for loss of time, the lack of internet connection and television, and of course.... ICE. COLD. SHOWERS. =0=0=0

Alright, here's the updated track for Hurricane Bill. It seems to have a chance of hitting the area around Massachusetts with its outer bands. It also looks like it's more probable for it to loop around in the Atlantic.

There was a big rainstorm a few nights ago. It knocked out the power in some of the TV channels, but other than that, really no long-lasting effects. I'd also like to add it was nice to get to be able to get all the lawnwork done on the day it stopped raining.

I was watching TV today and they updated the charts of Hurricane Bill. It may hit the northern U.S., but what they think it'll do is move away from the U.S., making a big arc away from the mainland like the charts posted show. However, if it does so, it'll be a direct hit on Bermuda.

Didn't the windstorm last September knock your power out? Columbus had no power for two weeks. Thankfully, I got mine back in four days.
