Depends, I normally roll with http://moniker.com for .nets, they're only about $6.90 and either moniker or godaddy - depending on the coupons going - for .coms which come to ~$8.50, it's very easy to find the ~base price for domains now.

Setting up a registrar or looking for cheap prices? ;)

Around $8, however I have seen some as low as $6. I would not go lower than that, because most places offering that come with no protection. Personally I like GoDaddy, because of the offers they tag on to the domain.

But the current one I own came free with HostMonster's package I bought. So.... meh, lol.

Randosity is something you should see...

Godaddy usually, for whatever they charge. They're pretty quick to process them, and I can easily point them to my nameserver with minimal hassle. They also give good deals sometimes, too. Like a few months ago I got the .com, .net, org, and .info variations of my full name for only $24.95.

How would you go about setting up a registrar name-jockey?

Depends on what you want to do; just a wanky reseller or a proper registrar? To be a proper registrar, like godaddy, you'd need to have at least $50,000 in liquid capital and pay the $5,000 per year ICANN fee (I think they're the figures). To be a reseller you can just find a company that offers accounts where you pay them $1000 upfront and add it to your account, then people buy domains through your website and the price is deducted from your account. It's very easy to do and extremely unprofitable and a massive waste of time.

No, you can't get your own top level domain. There are plans for them to be released in the future - at $100,000 just for the setup - so only big companies will ever have them, however I don't believe these plans will ever get put into action and even if they do they'll hardly be used. If you take a look at everything surrounding .eco, that's been considered for many years now and it's still not available, also .xxx has been requested many many times and repeatedly refused.

Don't even expect to get your own .tld :)

Yeah I wrote to the Scottish government asking why we don't have .sco and they said they just don't want to pay for it basically as it would be a drain on money. And I want to come in and save the day...oh well...

If I had that kind of cash lying around I'd invest it all in Google.
Or I'd buy www.kiwi.kiwi. I wonder if people would visit it.

Not really. Do you pay $1.65 for the domain or the hosting or the domain and hosting? We're discussing domains only.

If that's just for the domain, that's a terrible deal.

That's including hosting, which we are NOT talking about here. So that isn't the going rate...

I think my domain was $10. I was too lazy to go through anything else, so spent an extra 4 dollars through Bluehost.
