Are you talking about anti-heroes like Wolverine, Spawn, and Batman (Dark Horse Version). Anti-heroes are either for self benefit, or they kill for the greater good. They are not necessarily villains though.
I like all villains successful or not as long as they are challenging for the superhero. Because we all know in the end the good guy wins but I mean villains vs Superman? Of course Superman is going to win unless someone has kryptonite, there is no point in the villain trying.
My favorite type of villain is the brute force henchman working for the mastermind as a work horse. They are by far the coolest.
