I am getting ready to order the iBuyPower Chimera X58 with:
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard
6 GB 1333-MHz DDR3 RAM
2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5
LCD Touch Screen thermal display and fan controller
22 inch monitor (1900x1080 max)

Is this practical at all or just complete overkill?

Please send me a private message if you saw and liked my sig.

That's a great computer for gaming, if that's what you intend on using it for.

If not, and you'll be playing the occasional game and using the internet, then that's definitely overkill.

Quad Core Q6600 Intel overclocked to 3.2 Ghz || 4GB G.Skill DDR2 RAM || ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB || Gigabyte P45 mobo || Dual monitor 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 || A FUCKING MOUSE

Nobody needs 6GB of RAM, and I'm actually pretty certain that Windows can't utilize that much RAM.

If I want gaming I move 3 feet over to my PS3 controller, if I want to just go on the internet and fuck around on NG...I, uh, move 3 feet over to my PS3 controller..but the point is there is no reason for those kind of specs unless you just stole that computer or spend your money like a dumbshit

Wow, that sounds like a great build for gaming. If you're not going to be gaming then yeah, overkill. But how much is this going to cost you?

Cut the RAM, just get 4GB RAM and a 3ghz processor. and a heavily cooled case.

You would want a 3GHz processor, I reckon. At least if you're going to boot Vista.

Why spend money on a great PC...Ummm I don't know, because there is such a thing as gaming on a PC. I know, I know ot's hard to believe that people still use their computers for more than just a fancy paperweight, but not all people believe that the PS3 is the be all end all device that it is.

Also I suppose it depends on what kind of games you play. RTS games and MMOs are games that can hog lots of memory due to the amount of on screen models.

What retailer are you buying from?

My Vista 64-bit with 8GB of RAM says otherwise :p

but yea 32-bit Vista can only utilize up to 4GB of RAM, 64-bit is needed for more...

Really for us to give our opinion on the setup you'd have to tell us what you are going to use it for.
If all you're doing is playing flash games and surfing the interwebs then yes that is total overkill. However if you're a gamer or doing some very processor intensive work such as 3D graphics work then the setup sounds great. Although you'd have to make sure that the software can take full advantage of your hardware, I know that Adobe software still isn't 64 bit and doesn't support more than one cpu core effectively.

The fact is, that runs to $1,708, which most certainly is overkill.

You can get a SIGNIFICANTLY better deal if you build yourself, or get a friend to build for you. You could probably build a gaming PC for around half that figure.
