Hey, does anyone out there still care about NASA and the space program? I fear that it could just be me that actually gives a shit about what we're doing in space and the wonders of the universe.

back when we first went to the moon, being an astronaut gave you celebrity status. now, if you're an astronaut, you get average status, since no one watches shuttle launches or keeps track of whats going on in the ISS ( International Space Station ). I wonder, what everyone will think when we go back to the moon, or to mars....will everyone watch the landings then, or will people continue to ignore the space program? Will space travel, one day, be as common as driving to work in the morning?

Space is a beautiful thing in my opinion. I admire what NASA is doing.

We've been doing shuttle missions for at least 2 decades now. It's routine really, unless they disintegrate in re-entry. And trust me, the shuttles are falling apart and are going to be retired soon.

Call me when we invade Mars.

Every awnser leads to another question.

Person1: How did the continents separate?

Person2: Millions of years ago we were one giant landmass called "Pangaea." A chain of volcanoes erupted from the mantle of the Earth and cracked the crust and separated it. In conjunction with plate tectonics, the continents drifted away from each other and are situated where they are now.

Person1: Oh....alright then.

For the time being, they're going to be in this relative area for a long-ass time.

Personally I don't really see the point. Space is one of those things we'll need conquer. A visit to the moon is all we'll amount to. Space stations and homes in the future? I doubt it really.

Space should be admired from a far. We can spend millions, billions trying to unlock the secrets of the universe but man never will. So really imo that money could be better spent. Like on the lifes of people, not on infinite space.

I absolutely care about it. I think it would be a very poor decision to get rid of, or downsize it. The day we stop trying our best to understand the world around us, is the day that we've truly failed as a race.

Actually no we don't. The sea is still a mystery to us. There are a lot of things going on down there that we can't study, like what kind of creatures live in the Mariana trench, etc.

well, we can't know what life is down there, but we can know how deep something is or if there is a volcanic chain underwater.

I honestly think that with the recent awful tragedies associated with space exploration has turned the idea of interplanetary exploration from a huge wonder into a needless, money wasting peril.

When a multi-billion dollar mission can't even get off of the ground because of a minor technical flaw, well I guess the public view looks at space exploration less as a way to explore new worlds and more of a colossal waste of resources and human lives.

I went to the Kennedy Space Center two weeks ago while I was on a trip down there. NASA is still doing a lot of stuff. How do you think the satellites we use to power GPS systems got up there? Or TV satellites? Those things don't launch themselves.

You're right, they want to retire the shuttles, though Atlantis will be going up either August 16th or 18th--can't remember the exact date. They want to go back to single-use rockets like they did with the first space missions.

Up until she was laid off, a friend of mine, who is an astronomy grad student, worked for NASA. According to her, they're interested in exploring other planets because of the possibility of mining ores we can use down here.
