I'm an audiophile, I love listening to music, but I've been neglecting my hobby by listening with cheap Sony headphones.

So yesterday I bought the Skullcandy HESH headphone which was on Sale for $44.99

The difference in sound quality was noticeable, but not drastically different from my older Sony headphones which actually served me well for a $7.00 price tag. From my judgement, I thought the sound quality was decently good, but not astounding either.

These headphones have a 50mm driver which is supposed to give more room for my iPod to bass boost the headphones without distortion. But the bass in these headphones is better than earbuds, but not very amazing either. And when I boost the EQ on my iPod, the bass gets distorted especially in hip hop songs.

I was expecting headphones of this size to deliver some magical audio performance, and I'm not too experienced with purchasing headphones, so I really don't know if I got the performance for my money. If you know much about audio, did I make a good choice?

From what I've heard, Skullcandy are extremely overrated and usually don't give you what you want and what is promised. I asked the same question a while ago and this is generally what people told me.

Congrats, you paid a massive sum of money that you didn't need to. Now you're just buying it for the brand name.

I had a cheaper pair of headphones by Skull Candy kind of like those. Skull Candy pretty much sucks. All my headphones are cheap. The ones I'm using right now are $20, they fit comfortably in my ear and sound good and bassy, that's all I need.

I find it interesting because if you look up an expansive pair of headphones for any brand, half the reviewers say it sucks and the other half love it. I got a pair of these a year or so ago and I think their great! Since they can fit around any ear no matter its size and the only way to truly break it is by stepping on it.

I bought a pair of $40 Skullcandies a while ago, and not even a week after I got them, they broke. I went back and got a pair of $10 Creative ear buds, but I actually liked the sound quality more in the Creative ones, and they're much more comfortable then the Skullcandies.

I made a vow never to spend that much money on a pair of headphones again.

I bought a pair of Skullcandies about a month ago because I was tired of the cheap one's breaking over and over when I was being gentle with them. With this I have a limited lifetime warranty.

From my experience with Skullcandy head phones are that they are hipster shit. I bought one just to see what all the hysteria was about that I was getting from my friends. The sound is sub-par, and about half a step up from the packaged iPod ear-buds. I later returned them and purchased a pair of Panasonic RP-HTX7 headphones. They provide a very rich deep sound, they also block out noise pretty effectively, and give a very powerful bass.

Maybe later.....

My bro has a pair of those. Not worth the money he paid for them in my opinion, but he loves them. I guess it is just the persons personal preferance.

I have a $200 pair of Bose headphones. I know it's really pricey but I've never heard such a clear sound until I tried these. My dad uses a high-end Sony headphone and it's massive, but still doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my Bose ones. I was actually considering making my next big purchase an actual audiophile headphone... something in the $500+ range.

I prefer those headphones that cover your ears but don't mind the half open ones.

I'm currently using these old Pioneer SE 305, they're good.

I'm hoping to get some better ones.

Skullcandy are highly overrated, and are mostly worn/used like some kind of fashion item by all the kids who think that they're the shit.

If you want good sound, but want to look like a fucking nerd then buy one of these motherfuckers.

Sennheiser hd 215

And if you're really looking for quality audiophile "certified" headphones, be ready to shell out more than just 50 dollars.

Size is not at all relevant to quality. I have two pairs of Sennheiser earbuds and they deliver bass very, very nicely. Earhuggers aren't really my style but they do make some freaking good ones.

If you know much about audio, did I make a good choice?

Not even slightly. As already mentioned many times, Skullcandy are just overpriced shite. If you want some good quality headphones on a tight-ish budget, look into buying something from Sennheiser. Their cheapest headphones (apart from shitty low-budget ones) are a few pennies more than most Skullcandy headphones, but you will never look back on buying them.

This is filler text.

Lol, skullcandy suck. They're for people who think headphones are an accessory, rather than something to improve the quality of your music.

I recommend Bose, or sennheisers. Sennheisers are cheap but very effective with a large range of products, while bose give you the best quality possible, very few exceptions.

I'll make you a sig. Pm me or visit this thread.

Yea I have the hesh 50mm and I have to agree with you, better than standard buds, but not amazing. It's pretty good with loud bass tho. AKG is the way to go in the headphone department.

My friend bought a really nice Skullcandy headphone and he broke it. I asked for it and he gave it to me, which I then fixed. I now have $130 headphones for free.

I assume that the part about audio cables is also applicable to headphones.

When you buy Skullcandy headphones you're paying for the artwork and brand name, not the actual sound quality of the headphones. Go buy a pair of Sennheiser headphones instead.

I got my skullcandy for the funky colors....plus i had 1000 to blow on random useless crap. They' look cool at least, right? I'd return your skullcandies, but if ur dead set on getting one get something other then plain black. Unless u want plain black, then get a cheeper and probably better sounding one.

I didn't pay a massive sum of money though, I just spent $44.99, as much as I can reasonably spend for a pair of headphones. I don't have enough to buy Bose headphones which are undeniably amazing.

I think the iPod's poor built in amp brings down the optimal performance of headsets, is it true?

Plus I really like my Hesh, it does deliver excellent sound and comfort, only lacking blocking out sounds both inside and out.

I've had a ton of headphones and $12 Sonys are the best I've had. Paying a lot isn't necessary.

I just use a set of TDK headphones. They're about £8 tops. Yet they have good enough sound quality. As long as I can hear stuff, and it's not tinny or poor quality, I'm happy.

Yeah, Skullcandy is more of a fashion headphone for people who want to think that having bulky headphones with skulls on them makes them trendy. It's not about sound quality, it's about the look.
