Exactly. I also don't agree with films that are simply very influential being on the list. Just because it was ground breaking at the time doesn't mean it's still good now. Acknowledge them, of course, but don't include them in a best films ever list, because they're just not.
You mentioned Citizen Kane earlier in this thread, and I think that's the film partly responsible for this sort of thinking. I do actually agree with you on it, even though I haven't seen it in a while: its innovations in the cinematic sense might have been something at sometime, but yeah, I didn't think it was all that great when I saw it in this time. This might have something to do with my present-day view, that already had me knowing the big reveal... but is it really that useful to the story? I could probably name other films that surprised me more, and those same films probably built it up better too. It doesn't really help when it seems every "great critic" mentions it in their top ten. Geeks like me sometimes refer to it as hype backlash, and while some would argue that's only because it's remained popular... well, the things I mentioned above.
With that in mind, there some older films I think are still great today. Most obviously, I'd probably say Battleship Potempkin, though there are quite a few others I love too. Someone mentioned a Hitchcock film, and I believe they were talking about Rebecca: that's a good film as one example.
As for the IMDB top list, while I think it's a good way of seeing which films are popular, there are a few problems with it. I've not seen The Dark Knight yet (blame the studio hero-movie gold rush for turning me off, eh) so I can't comment on that, but I still think it's relatively English-language film centric, though it's much better than other lists I've seen. I don't know, I should've looked through it already. If it's changed substantially, my point still stands for other lists.
I don't think I could make a top ten myself (yeah, this post isn't much as a result). I'll hopefully come up with a list of one hundred films I've enjoyed to some degree (not a top one hundred) that show my own tastes. Until then... well, there's my blog post I suppose. All I can say is that I like films.
