Too bad he never won an Oscar, fix anyone? Even for the movie that won the Best Picture, he didn't win Best Director.

There may be hype when a new film comes out, but I highly doubt that's 90% why certain 00s films are included, or even 50%. Keep in mind only votes from regular users are included for that list, so people don't abuse it.

Also, favourite movies go in your profile, so unless people thoughtfully debate others' picks, there's no point to this thread.

Lethal Weapon is pure win. In my opinion, it can only be beaten by epics like Pulp Fiction.

Also this. Shit like Citizen Kane and Cassablanca might be famous and historically significant, but they're not good.

My top 10 would look something like:
1. Jurassic Park
2. Aliens
3. Terminator 2
4. Escape From New York
5. Serenity
6. The Thing
7. Alien
8. Shawshank Redemption
9. Tremors
10. Trainspotting

But if did it again tomorrow I'd change my mind and it'd be slightly different.

At 8/11/09 05:22 PM, TheMaster wrote: Exactly. I also don't agree with films that are simply very influential being on the list. Just because it was ground breaking at the time doesn't mean it's still good now. Acknowledge them, of course, but don't include them in a best films ever list, because they're just not.

You mentioned Citizen Kane earlier in this thread, and I think that's the film partly responsible for this sort of thinking. I do actually agree with you on it, even though I haven't seen it in a while: its innovations in the cinematic sense might have been something at sometime, but yeah, I didn't think it was all that great when I saw it in this time. This might have something to do with my present-day view, that already had me knowing the big reveal... but is it really that useful to the story? I could probably name other films that surprised me more, and those same films probably built it up better too. It doesn't really help when it seems every "great critic" mentions it in their top ten. Geeks like me sometimes refer to it as hype backlash, and while some would argue that's only because it's remained popular... well, the things I mentioned above.

With that in mind, there some older films I think are still great today. Most obviously, I'd probably say Battleship Potempkin, though there are quite a few others I love too. Someone mentioned a Hitchcock film, and I believe they were talking about Rebecca: that's a good film as one example.

As for the IMDB top list, while I think it's a good way of seeing which films are popular, there are a few problems with it. I've not seen The Dark Knight yet (blame the studio hero-movie gold rush for turning me off, eh) so I can't comment on that, but I still think it's relatively English-language film centric, though it's much better than other lists I've seen. I don't know, I should've looked through it already. If it's changed substantially, my point still stands for other lists.

I don't think I could make a top ten myself (yeah, this post isn't much as a result). I'll hopefully come up with a list of one hundred films I've enjoyed to some degree (not a top one hundred) that show my own tastes. Until then... well, there's my blog post I suppose. All I can say is that I like films.

you BASTARD!!!! I love both, but Zack Snyder was GREAT, considering our other options are 28 days later (shit), 28 weeks later (shit), and that God awful Resident Evil series. (*shudders)

George A. Romero made Night, Dawn, Day, and Land of the Dead. What a fucking badass man he is, gifting us with his series!!

Some of my favs are in my profile, but idk about a top 10 of all time :\

I like comedies and movies that make you think about the real meaning of it, but often times these movies aren't considered that great because obvioulsy a comedy isnt meant to be serious, which most movies in top 10 lists are, and movies that make people think are often underrated because most people are like "roflz dat movie wuz dum cus it didn't meen anyfing dur"

So I'll just name some of the best recent movies to come out

Watchmen
Star Trek
Terminator: Salvation
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
The Hangover

I feel like I'm forgetting some, but yeah.

It wasn't really about conformity or anything like that. It's just that I can't often afford to go to the cinema, and when I looked in retrospect at all the shallow, unexciting superhero movie cash-ins I'd seen over the past few years, I decided to give it a miss. I do regret it a little, because of how great everyone says it is, with both fans and critics in mind. That said, because I don't get to the cinema anywhere near as often as I'd like to, most of my favourite films are ones I get quickly and cheaply on DVD... and these happen to be a little older most of the time.

I'll see The Dark Knight some time I'm sure, but trying to be anti-conformist was certainly not my reason for being turned off, I assure you. If that were true about me, I think a part of my mind should just blow its brains out right now.
