What's with the Internet & Sonic?

I don't get it, why does the internet have such a huge boner over Sonic? Like every 1/15 people on the internet, are huge fans of it, it's just a game, and they all have names like Sonicroxmysox1231231. Theres a whole bunch of sonic fanfic, and forums, and shit. I mean, yeah the first games were good, the new ones not really, but I didn't even know Sonic had a story. It's probably bigger than the Halo Fanbase...So why do people make such a big deal about it, is there something I'm missing?

I've wondered about it ever since I first heard of the internet.

I don't understand it myself. I mean there were some okay things about sonic, the game was fun, the second cartoon series was actually interesting. But everything else, the mass commercialization, every other sonic television series and every Sonic game to come out this decade are pretty bad... to put it lightly.

I suspect that fandom only accounts for a portion of this internet sonic craze, trolling plays a large part of it... though I could be wrong.

I had the same thought once. Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't even half as popular back when I was a kid when it first came out. I have two theories as to why this is:

1.) The game franchise has grown to include a wide variety of genres and caracters stemming from the simple side-scroller which started the craze, drawing in more fans with each new generation.

or, the more likely of scenarios,

2.) 15 years ago there weren't nearly as many crap cartoons about video game characters, as well as 728065012 sites featuring Sonic character smut. These poorly drawn pornographic images feed the horny minds of stimulation-addicted kids who have grown to love decadence in any form, even pictures of anthropomorphic woodland creatures from video games in sexually compromising positions, and thus their devotion to the game grows as a result.

Younger people are automatically drawn to a classic story of good vs. evil with heroes, villains, anti-heroes, superpowers, mythology, action and adventure. But when you throw porno into the equasion, you've got a run-away train. Basically, I blame Rule 34.

Sonic has sucked badly ever since they stopped making the games on the genesis. If they want to save the series then they should just remove every character from the series other than sonic, tails, knuckles, and robotnik.

Bullshit he didn't survive 3D, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were good games. Unfortunately, the Sonic Team of developers fell apart I believe, and then the subsequent games were made by total hacks.

Really, the Internet is a reflection of society as a whole. The obsession with Sonic only seems more significant because of the culture of the people who use the websites that you visit.

I dunno why exactly, but I like the little blue moron just cause he's got a decent and balanced personality. No big headded EMO like Sauske and no weird Quirks (IE Naruto shouting "Believe it" for the umpteenth time which i HATE) and he's a pretty basic hero. I mean, name another hero(besides the other Sonic char) who can kick THAT much *** with just his hands and feet!

A lot of people like heroes that don't have a huge freaking bag of tricks over heroes that do, of course there are such heroes that outrun sonic in popularity (Mario*cough* Link*cough* ^_^ ) out there. But case in point, sword doesn't make the Knight Who he is after all, it's what he does and goes about using it. The newer games suck I'll admit (being one of those random fanboys you people are flaming btw -_-;;; ) but at least Sonic himself hasn't changed any. Some of them are just plain fun even if they DO suck. then again that's my opinion, so I'll shut up now.

Maybe that's why people still like Mario Sonic Link etc?

He's a cultural icon, like Mario. He came out a little after Mario but is arguably more famous.

Well, it's quite a bit older than the Halo fanbase, and kids love that shit. I was walking in chinatown the other day and saw this little 3 year old who can't even talk wearing a Sonic t-shirt. They loved him then, and the new kids love him. And the people who bought the first Sonic games still have hard ons for them so it's seen as a piece of nostalgia. Take a look at these sad saps.

Even if that were to happen, the fan base would slowly find a way to bring him back. Either by continuing to make fan websites, prardies, petitions, etc. of him. OR by relying on other sources such as the Archie comics and Cartoons.

This question is just like asking people why does everyone likes sports so much? What's the difference between someone swinging a ball with a stick, and a talking blue hedgehog that can run at the speed of sound?

Why is sports such a big impact to people, and very few complain about it? A tradition? We can simply say Sonic is a tradition, as well!!
