As a chemistry major, I'm eager to test my knowledge all the time. Go ahead - shoot! Although be sure not to ask questions about physics or biology. I'm aware chemistry bridges the gap between the two in some instances, but yeah I probably won't know the answer if you ask me about wave functions with electrons.

Ask me a question about chemistry!

Is baking soda a direct descendant of God?

It's in recipes, it puts out fires, it cleans, really what doesn't it do?

Why is it that when divers surface faster than the bubbles emitted from their oxygen tanks, they suffer from what is called "the bends"?

This is pretty much all I remember from my high school chemistry class.

I don't know who coined the term, but it's a derivative of the word Alchemy. New scientists in the enlightenment era didn't want to be associated with the BS behind Alchemy, so they made a new name. Something like that.

At 8/6/09 03:24 AM, satanbrain wrote: chemical composition of nucleotides.

Carbon rings with the occasional nitrogen interrupt, depending on the nucleotide, and oxygen bonded to some parts of the various rings. There's also hydrogens attached all over the place to the structure. Adenine and Thymine I believe have two rings. Overall, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen. DNA adds phosphate and deoxyribose sugars to the mix.

Because it's got applications in pretty much every field of industry/science.

2. why ARENT you a physicist?

The short answer - too much math. Also I like biology, which chemistry works better with.

3. what is the nest chemical of them all?

The best chemical... that's a really hard one. Nitric acid is pretty nifty. I like it.

How would you synthesise chromyl chloride (CrO2Cl2)? What precautions might you take? Is it likely to be a liquid or a solid at ordinary temperatures, and what is its likely colour?

Bleach is a vague term. You can use a variety of chemicals as bleach.

I'm pretty sure its NX nerve agent. Mercury really isn't that bad. Yes, it'll kill you, but it's pretty avoidable. NX however will jump right into your nerves and kick your ass from the inside out!

Botulin is also the most potent toxin ever. I think.

I don't know. Lyse and precipitate everything except DMT seems to be the only real solution to this. DMT ftw though =)

I don't know exactly how you would make that. It doesn't look easy!

It'd probably be solid by itself, but you'd probably have to create that in a solution. As for color, you'd have to determine exactly how much energy there are between the electron levels and calculate the amount of energy a photon would have from converting that energy... it's not something you can know off the top of your head. My guess is green though because of the 2 Cls.

You google searched "hard chemistry problems" and the first result was this page, which you copypasta'd accordingly.

The tipoff was the British spelling of synthesize, which was odd considering your profile indicates that you live in the state of Maine, in the USA.

but uranium and plutonium are lame as chemicals :P

I would be totally fine with holding a ball of uranium. It's not going to hurt you. Holding a "ball" of NX gas however, would fuck you up!

But yeah, thanks to physics uranium and plutonium became epic. Not because of their chemical properties though.

Time to get my hands on some NX nerve agent and Botulin and unleash it at the next Democratic National Convention. Or my school which ever one I hate.

Why do we say Girl A and Boy B have chemistry, I think being chemistry is a science and the mainstream isn't interested in it some other word would be used, but as the example above its main stream pop culture as Hollywood actors.
