As they should if they want to stay in second place in the market. Oh the holidays are going to be so fun this year.
Fixed that for you.
I think the outcome of the holidays will probably depend on how many of the Sony rumors are true. Slim/Price drop is a given. GT5, MAG, and PS2 backwards compatability through software emulation are the other possibilities. I think GT5 and MAG holiday releases are probably true. The B/C is also probably true, but not this holiday I don't think. If one of those games is added to Sony's lineup, I think the PS3 will have a pretty clear software edge. Add both and it's a runaway, assuming MAG doesn't suck.
From the "system seller" software perspective, I think Sony has a bit of an edge as well. Halo ODST and Forza 3 already have previous releases on the system. If you're a big Forza or Halo fan, you probably already have the system. Halo ODST will sell some systems in conjunction with a price cut, but not anywhere near to the extent that Halo 3 did. Uncharted 2 and GT5, on the other hand, have the potential to sell quite a few system. Uncharted 2 demos very well and the first one came out when the system wasn't very affordable, so a lot of people didn't buy the system at that time. With a price cut, Uncharted 2 should cause a bunch of people to hop on board. GT5 is, of course, a huge franchise that will sell a bunch of consoles whenever it comes out.
Actual console sales are a bit tricky to predict, since we don't really know exactly what the prices will be, but I expect it to be fairly competitive. I don't think the PS3 will be dominated in sales like last year.
Any chance either the 360 or PS3 manage to sell more than the Wii for a month? Maybe the month of the price cut(s).
