See, I don't mean to be rude, but it seems like that could be better accomplished by just donating money, rather than buying a plane ticket and flying over there yourself. Nothing personal, it's just that I've always been skeptical about the worth of these kinds of service trips (this article pretty much explains what I mean).

We were the first group of white people that has been there in about 100 years.
Been where? Sierra Leone? That's not true at all...

First group. many people have been there. But we were the first big group that's come in anybody's memory, including the government officials.

And yes. It would make more sense to donate money. But it's just not the same. To them, a white person coming over and making friends with them is MUCH better than eating. And money you send over doesn't get to the really poor people. I promise you, the people we lived with have never seen a pence of foreign aid.

One more story.

We visited an orphanage. Now, orphans get no kind of aid. They're on their own, along with orphanages. So these orphans hadn't eaten in two weeks. Ages 4 to 16. So we went into the market and bought them 100 bags of rice. Enough for two months, which is all they can keep at a time, due to mice and things.

Huh. How big was the group?

Eh, I've got my doubts about that.

Too bad you couldn't bake them any fresh cookies, they would of really liked that. :)

Did you or your group ever get in trouble with anyone? Like corrupt cops perhaps? They seem to own all the third world countries.

We were pulled over once by a crooked cop and he demanded Le5,000 from each of us. But other than that, we were highly respected actually, because the leader of the country is trying really hard to eliminate corruption.

I can imagine. I've been to Africa, it is such a beautiful place. People don't realise though, that what they see on T.V is just the underlying story, beneath that is a country where people fight and eat, not just for pleasure and entertainment, but for survival!

This is 10-year-old Samual. (Sam-ooh-ahl) He has elephantitus on his face.

And if your a kid like this, you won't last very long. Its a survival of the fittest out there, and...Well....I don't think that kid is fit, and, not to be snide or anything but, I don't think that kid is going to survive.

Its a sad story out there. Got any more pictures you want to show us? Any more stories?

I'm glad you didn't die and I'm glad you had a good time. May i ask you a question....How did you get the parasites?

Fuck you. Only YOU hate Africa because you have never been there and you are one of those people who are like "They are poor, I'm better than them....Why should i care?" Well you should care. Africa isn't shit, nor are the people there. In fact, they are the nicest people I have ever met. They will do anything for English/white people, they think we are brilliant.

Just because they are mostly poor and don't have houses, doesn't mean they are shit. Man, just grow up.

We did a lot of different things. We fed a lot of 'piken' in villages around Mekeni. We taught hygiene, how to prepare meat better so that it didn't make them sick. We also taught them how to boil water to get rid of a lot of the nasty stuff in the water.. There's plenty of trees and stuff, so they have lots of wood for fires. They should be much healthier now, as long as they do as we taught them.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life.

Here's another picture of some piken.

We did. Africa is a very people oriented culture. They will walk up to you, say hello, and just start talking. 10 minutes later you know their life story and they're trying to find out yours. You could literally sit under a tree all day and do nothing but meet people. They'd just walk up and make friends all day long. I love it. They're all so much more friendly than us westerners.

Another photo. We went to this area a few times. It's where I sliced my shoulder open. Good times.

I really do admire the work you are doing, and I know this sounds expected but I honestly am grateful that there are people who can still show a shroud of decency and selflessness. It's one thing to send money over to aid Africa, but it's a completely different thing to go over there and experience it yourself.

Sending money is good but mostly people just do it to rid themselves of that guilt, but you have gone over and learned from it and opened your mind/heart to the world. And you've inspired me to do the same.

Interested? Probably not. It's okay, I wouldn't be either. Just PM me

It is. It's very sad to see him. I don't know of I've already said this, but at one point, we went to the Market to buy bread and we made the mistake of bringing with us. A mob formed and we had to beat them back with sticks. We had to use those sticks several times, because them Sierra-Leonian men would go after our girls all the time. Most of the time they were just hitting on them, so we just told them that they're off limits, but sometimes, they needed a little more persuasion.

More pics later. I'm posting this from my iPhone. I leave for a week backpacking in Alaska like... Right now. Bye again.

Damn straight. I'm thinking of buying that continent.

If all of the women in America and the UK didn't buy makeup for a year, the saved money could solve world hunger for 5 years.

The world produces enough food annually to give every human being 3,000 calories per day.

So yes. We COULD buy that continent and save MANY lives every year. Why don't we? Why do the US and the UK spend more money on ending lives than we spend on saving lives?

I'm not trying to impose guilt or anything. By all means, if you work hard for your money, spend it as you wish. It's yours and you shouldn't be obligated to do anything with it that you don't want to do. But you should feel guilty for wasting the resources available to you, because frankly, you're DAMN lucky to have them.

Elephantitus. It's a disease that will eventually kill him. He wont live to see his children. He probably will never have a friend, a girlfriend, or a wife.

Well, well mister. You are one fucked up sonuvabitch. Have some fucking respect for the people that are dying because of a whole bunch of diseases. This picture is not Photoshopped at all to those other people that said it was. It is called Elephantitus or something like that. And because he looks different than you and is deformed because of a disease, you have to go and make fun of the poor soul because you think you are better than him. All of us in America,The UK, etc. are very lucky to be living the life we are now. WE are very lucky to not be suffering like the people in Africa. You oughta be slapped for calling a diseased child such a name. Ignorant asshole.
