Personally, I think rap is more innovative then most other genre's because unlike metal and rock, it didn't branch off anything, it simply came up from Mohamed Ali (some comedien) and ways of codes of transporting drugs. That and the fact that artists interact with each other more then any other industry.
I like rap, I used to listen to rock, but there wasn't anything I seemed to like beyond Linkin park and a couple other songs, it seemed all repetitive to me as after all, a guitar is a guitar, and it will always sound like a guitar, which for me made it sound repetitive. Believe me I like some metal and rock, but the fact of how I've interacted with some metalheads kinda pushes me away from it (I've never seen such hypocrisy.......).
I got into rap after I heard the X-ecutioners when they collaborated with Linkin Park and made the awesome song Its Going Down, I played that song over and over again. Then i saw some other work of the X-ecutioners and came across M.O.P., the most hardcore rappers out there, and the most innovative out of alot of artists (as in, they broke the traditional rhyme rhyme rhyme and concentrated more on aggressive presentation). Then I saw an interview with Twista, another innovative rapper who is one of the few rappers who rap so fast that it takes skill to understand them. Then through M.O.P. I came across 50 Cent and G-Unit, determined to be not biased I gave him a listen to some songs (of course I got some suggestions by fans) and I liked it, I first got into G-Unit though. And with that got me into Young Buck, Mobb Deep and Spider Loc (i was already into 50 by this point). I also heard of other artists like Young Jeezy and gave them a listen, put them in (not Lil Wayne though) then I went to datpiff and downloaded lesser known artists and the like.
And thats how I got into rap.
Now let's shoot down some arguements:
"Rap talks about violence, rape, sex and drugs too much"
first of all, rape is not in rap, or its rare and by bizarre artists, second of all violence sex and drugs is already something every other parts of entertainment have embraced to begin with, why should rap be targetted just because its a music genre?
"Rap takes no skill whatsover"
Incorrect, yes anyone can rap, just like anyone can make a rock band, rap is like poetry, same build and all, that and the fact that some poets just suck and others are amazing.
"Well some rap is fine but most of it is crap, like 50 Cent"
This is more of a personal preference thing TBH. 50 Cent isn't necesarily like that, he's more of a genius, he did everything possible to make money, acting video games, he's an underground artist and a mainstream artist at the same time. How is this possible? Easy, he makes singles like In Da Club while goes back and makes stuff like I'll Whip Yo Head Boy, however most noticeably is G-Unit, they have hardly any albums at all, two in total, and those only feature 50 Tony Yayo Lloyd Banks and Young Buck along with one artist hardly even known. However the actual G-Unit totaled 12 rappers at one point (including my famed rappers M.O.P.), and it was like that for a few years. What these rappers were doing were going making Mixtapes, G-Unit Radio is great and I would classify it as underground, along with many other mixtapes.
