3D Animation... 2009-08-01 13:59:37 Reply

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you knew a nice 3D software. Perferably free. I've been wanting to try it for a while but, I don't have hundreds to buy anything and everything I want so... yeah. Anyways if you have one in mind please tell me.

Maya is a really good program, but it's really expensive. Like Flash, you can get a student version for a discount I think, but it's still a lot of money.

Yeah, that'd be my issue... There is one that I found it was called "Anim8er" I think, but I could never do any animation, just models...

Blender and Anim8tor. All programs are modling software as well because you can't animate if you don't have any models to animate. Both are rerally easy and have many presets so you don't have to work too hard

3ds max and maya is what the big company's use.

Hmmm?

Well "Bid Buck Bunny" looked pretty professional. Don't you think?

blender would make an awesome program, but not to do anything outside of it (exports hardly work, especially for games)
Im using cinema 4d wich is really awesome (better and cheaper than maya and 3ds max)

DAZ Studio 3 is supposed to be pretty good. You can download a basic version for free, then upgrade to the pro version later after making some coin. They also offer some pre-built models and instruction documents for free; bear in mind you'll still need a PayPal or credit card even to get the free stuff. My computer couldn't run it because it was built when Pentium 4 was still new, but as long as you've got support for OpenGL 1.3 or above you should be fine.

Blender is pretty good too, especially for being 100% free, but there's a significant learning curve. I never got very far with it.

If all else fails: Google SketchUp. It's more for the technically inclined than artistic use, but the program is a cinch to use.

Hope this helped!

What I already own Flash 8. This is for 3D animation, not flash.

okay, if your rendering it in the program itself, then blender is the one for you my friend, takes some time to learn, but its free and you can work really damn fast with it

Cinema 4D has a much more user-friendly UI and is cheaper than 3DS Max, but it's not better. And this is coming from a former Cinema 4D user that didn't believe 3DS Max was anything special until I carefully went through loads of tutorials and got the hang of it (while I still have alot of work to do in order to get really pushing it).

It's not that Cinema 4D can't do something that 3DS Max can, but 3DS Max has more control overall.

Also 3DS Max has such a large amount of tutorials that you can basically find one for whatever you need.

Oh yeah, and to actually contribute something worthwhile to the actual topic, I'd recommend Blender 3D. It has a steep learning curve, but the results combined with YafRay for example are top notch, professional quality. I'm planning on going to learn it, it's free after all.
