I love surreal horror.
If you have a good attention span and a very open mind, Eraserhead is really good. Spiderbaby is also really cool, though not really "graphic". Blind beast is pretty great... The mouth of madness, Lord of Illusions, Jacob's ladder, Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion, Nekromantik, The Ring, Necronomicon, Demon Knight and just tales from the crypt stuff in general.
Evil Dead 1-3 are awesome, but they are more tongue-in-cheek horror movies. I would recommend you watch them anyway. As for real horror movies, The Shining scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, and its an amazing movie so go for that.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space.
Fucking Godly.

That movie drove me to swallow a bottle of benzos. I felt so lonely watching it.

I realise my use of the comma is pretentious as fuck, but it's habit.
Thanks to Mr. MuffDiver for the sig.
I thought Blair Witch was pretty good, as its different to most stuff you see. And while not really scary, Alien was definitely a good Sci-Fi horror, as was Jason X - if only for that funny sleeping bag scene.

This. That is of course, assuming that he's talking about the original. Other good ideas are:
Re-Animator. A horror-comedy that's as scary as it is funny.
Maniac(1980)-Considered by many to be the sleaziest and most disturbing slasher movie out there.
Event Horizon-An excellent Sci-fi horror film.
Gozu-While it rarely carries the feeling of a horror film, it is one(and it's listed as one on IMDb), and the ending is pretty much guarunteed to shock you.
Ravenous-Great horror film with some nice touches of black humor.
Deranged-Perhaps the most realistic depiction of serial killer Ed Gein that's out there. Names have been changed though.
The Last Man on Earth-Fuck I Am Legend. This is an adaption of Richard Matheson's classic novel done right.

It is probably the scariest series of japanese movies you can get D:
I actually shat bricks when I saw them all for the first time.
There are 4 of them, am I right?

I'm tired of all of this SAW shit and I wanna see some actually well made horror.
That was an opinion, get off of me.
The Exorcist

Friday the 13 series [ a must ]
Nightmare on Elmstreet series [ a must ]

I wanted to suggest that.
Shawn of the dead. It's for the laughs, not really a lot of horror involved. Stephen King movies are always good. Maybe some of the old school chucky and Freddy Kreuger... It depends on what you fear the most I guess.
the excorsism of emily rose
prom night was a thriller though it was good

I do believe you mean to have said sci-fi/action not horror/thriller/
The grudge scared the sweat right off of my nutsack about a year ago, but I don't know how scary it is to other people.

My favorite horror movies are mostly old horror movie (from 70s/80s). Those are the best. I think the horror movie that really stand out are: Exorsist, Nightmares on Elm Street, Hellraiser 1 & 2. Those first 2 movies I actually didn't watch all the way, but I fully watched Hellraiser movies and they are one of the best horror movies ever. Hellraiser 1 and 2 are dark, evil, very disturbing, bloody and wierd which makes it really scary. You gotta watch it, man.

I'm glad that you mentioned that. Definitely my favorite of the three movie adaptions. I still think that a better one could be made which wouldn't change anything from the original story. I love Richard Matheson.
I might get shot for this, but I actually enjoyed Quarantine. It isn't the best movie, but the scenes shot in night vision looked really cool.
I also recomend Romero's films, original and remakes, except for the new Day of the Dead.
I am a new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.
My Bloody Valentine.
But if you'd prefer a more psychologically scary movie then I recommend "The Ring."
Those who do not learn from the mistakes of their past are doomed to repeat them.
Well it really depends on the kind of horror film you like.
Most people are into the whole "teenage horror", which is, of course, half of a porno.
Some examples of those are the Nightmare On Elm Street series, Friday The 13th Series, Hostel.
Another genre, which is widely popular, is the suspense film. These aren't very much categorized in the horror notion, but come on, who doesn't want to know what happens next?
e.g. anything by M. Night Shaymalan.
I personally love the B-horror movies, packed with red corn syrup and dummies. They have bad effects, but in its own way it is popular.
There's Wizard of Gore, Nine Lives, etc.
I also like the old horror films, in black and white, with poor sound. They just make me giggle with anxiousness.
Atom Age Vampire, The Blob, Nosferatu.
The most popular, for all ages, are the fictional thrillers, with vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc. We don't know what's out there, so sure, why not make a movie about it?
Too many to name here, but I'm sure you can go on imdb.com and check out what's good and what's not.
I hope this helps, and if not, I'm terribly sorry.
Jacobs ladder I heard is really good its the movie that inspired the silent hill series

That's not a horror film at all.
"Drag me to hell" Looks shit. Something about it just seems generic and probably not worth the time to watch.
See Let the Right One In. It's a superb '08 horror film from Sweden, about a bullied boy who falls in love with a mysterious girl who moves next door to him. The acting is first-rate. All the characters are believable. Several scenes have suspense written all over them, like a Hitchcock classic. It's also very atmospheric, as it takes place during the winter. The locations sometimes feel lonely and dark. The film is virtually flawless, IMHO. However, you should make sure the DVD you watch says theatrical subtitles, because there was a problem with them when the DVD first came out in March.
Nightmare On Elm Street 3:
DREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEAM WARRIUHS, AIN'T GONNA DREAM
NO MOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRE.
PRICES SO LOW, WE'RE THROWING THEM OUT THE WINDOW!
Haven't checked if anyone said this, but Pieces is a good slasher film.
