They made that many guns by having a computer make all of them. I think it just selects random parts and puts them together, and there's a new gun. One review I read (I think it was in PC Gamer) said there's a pistol that fires shotgun shells that explode on impact.

The guns are created by an in game weapon generator, if the prospects of finding something cool don't appeal to you, that's fine. If you want every FPS the feature the generic pistol, SMG, shotgun, assault rifle, sniper rifle, machine gun and rocket launcher, be my guest.

I think the developer needs to realise that a gun isn't unique just because it has different stats. There are more things that need to be different for it to count as a unique gun.

The point of the gun variations is uniquness. If you have a gun, and your friend has a gun, (and you happen to live in a waste land) more than likely, it will be modified to yourliking, your personality. You could get a smg, and wish for better accuracy or something like that, but your willing to sacrifice clip size or something. Thats basicaly what it is. Not neccisarily just dot sights or colors.

Indeed, but what about different stats, appearace AND effects?Is that different enough for ya?
Also, l really got sick of games having 1 type of gun for every gun "class"..this rerally should be intersting, l can't see why everybody is whining about this...sure, some guns may look very similar to each other, but how many are the odds of actually getting two really similar guns on the same game?None.
The guns you'll find will be radically different from each other since you'll only find ~1000 guns, so it's a really small portion of the whole lot of them...
You'd have to play, day and night, for 3,000 years to get every single combination...if you found a gun every ten minutes.
and l would LOVE finding a homing dart launcher and a revoler sniper rifle...stuff like that makes this game great...
Also, the graphics may not be the best, but it definitely doesen't "look like shit"...l hate how there is a guy on every thread about an upcoming game thay says "OMG that game sux"...it's just stupid.
At least give a good reason...

Yes, but what's differentiating from one gun and another can be just a single stat. Which, isn't really unique enough really to count as a gun. It's like putting an extended clip on a gun and calling it a different gun.

No, it's much more than that. We've been having a discussion over at /v/, and we have found that there is a lot more to it than just minor difference. Sure, each gun will only be slightly different than the one before it, but you aren't getting them all in order; in fact, you aren't getting them all.

It has been found the certain map points (enemy camos, ammo locations) are also randomly generated, and enemy type is randomly generated (to some extent) as well.

Also, we want bees as an ammo type, and a chainsaw-launching crossbow.

I hope there isn't just one single design for each type of weapon. What I am trying to say is that I hope that there will be multiple designs for say a shotgun or a pistol. Because I don't want 400,000 pistols that look the same but do different things. I want some variety in appearance.

and you know this how? its an rpg set in post apocaliptic settings. If fallout 3 can get away with it's atrocious story and AI, then i think borderlands will do just fine.

It has one up on fallout 3, the combats actually fun.

and if you think about it theres no way variations of 20 different guns can make up 3 million. It's impossible by the laws of math. There would have to be thousands to hundreds of thousands of COMPLETELY UNIQUE guns. In the playstation mag it says the count is around 500,000 unique guns, not including the 11 million or so variations of them.

The reason the number is so high is because the AI developes the guns. It's not random peices parts, its actual AI development of the weopons. Meaning 11 million is a number they estimated but really it could be even higher because theres no real telling as to what the AI will make.

Theres different types of AI manufactuers they've created to develope different styles of guns. A lot of thought went into it, and it's entirely possible that this game has pretty much any gun you can think of.

Any game developer that goes and says we have 20 guns and each with different variations still only reaches the limits of maybe 400 combinations total, which STILL isn't even close to 3 mill or as my magazine says 11 million!

Try to bash it all you want, it's impossible to work your way around those kind of numbers.

Go onto paint/flash/photoshop etc, and go into the custom colours section. Every single pixel is a different colour. Multiply that by the height (in pixels) of the little bar at the right (which makes it go darker and lighter). Multiply that by 20 (guns) and multiply that by 20 different bullet types (because of mention of shotgun shells in pistols). Multiply that by materials made to use the 'case' of the gun for each part. ETCETC
I think we could reach FAR past 400 combo's per gun.

A key selling point of COD4 was the ability to customize weapons. Combinations only ranging in the hundreds MAYBE thousands if you push it. Now heres a game that overs WAY MORE and your being a dick about it.

If it isn't one thing its another. Gamers today are unappreciative. This is the one thing a shooter fan dreams of and your pissing on it. Go jump in a fire.

Or, to put it more simply:
There are some AI-controlled gun manufacturers.There are 8-9 of them, and each one has a VERY different gun style..some of them are old-west tyle, some alien, some modern-but-cheat etc.
There are many, many gun pieces that can be assembled in different combinations, different enough to make the guns look unique..you can have homing dart launchers, revolver-sniper rifles, poisonous elecrtic weapons etc.
Then there aree the colors, but they just indicate the type of the weapon..then there's player customisation, so you can put more "points" into, say, magazine size but lose accuracy or something else.
As you can see all these combined differently can produce millions of guns, each one completely different from each other...and to think that a DLC will soon be released after the game..

Yes, that is VERY unlikely since Fallout 3 is 70% RPG 30% FPS while Borderlands is the exact opposite..l can't see how these games "rival" each other....
The only thing connecting those two is the wasteland theme and that's it.

*sigh* if you had the slightest idea about how the game works you'd know that the guns aren't "there" in the game, but randomly generated with some preset criteria...just read a few posts here and you'll get the point.

How are they opposites? Borderlands is a first-person shooter, action role-player. Similar to an extent. People are comparing them (or treating them as rivals) because they share similarities across both games. Again, they fit into the same category (to an extent, not entirely though)

So far, Borderlands looks great. I'm hoping it isn't lacking in story, or anything else for that matter.
