I know there is discussion bout this in the Muse C+C club, but I wanted to know what the General forum thought about Muse's new song:
United States Of Eurasia
Like it? Hate it? Queen influenced? Queen ripoff?
I myself love it, and I love Queen, so I don't mind the similiarities.
What do you think?

I think there is a line between showing respect for a band by doing a song that is similar to the band's style and just ripping them off.

Well done on crossing that line Muse...

Queen influenced? More like ripoff. They are totally trying to imitate Queens sound.

The only thing that I thought was particularly Queen-like, was the explosion at "there can be only one."

It sounded a lot like a similar part in We Are The Champions.

Not really a fan of that song... at all. Seems to be trying to be something more than it actually is.

I like Queen and I dislike Muse, but I think the song is a blantant rip off of Queen's style and not the band themselves.

I don't really care for it. The chord progressive reminded me of Day In The Life.

im a huge muse fan and i really dont like that song at all.. kinda cheesy...

there is also a few bands that have used queens style here and there .. i only heard it once in the mass vocal harmony... the rest of the song was sort of like they were trying too hard to mix rock and classical music.

The message of the song was a good message but it was so friggin blatant and overused it seemed like a commercial for an airline .. and what about south america africa greenland and australia?

I was never a fan....this song simply increases that.

There's wearing influences on your sleeve and then there's that.
If they're not careful they'll turn into a new 'Airbourne'

What I dislike more is that they try so blatantly to be "deep" and "literal," and so they plop in the term "Eurasia" in there from 1984.

Listening to it again, I don't like it so much. I hope the rest of 'The Resistance' isnt like this.

I don't understand why everyone's hating on this song, very obviously Queen-esque, but definitely nothing like Queen itself, anyone who's listened to at least 10 Queen songs knows this. People are just saying that to look intelligent in music knowledge. And to everyone who doesn't like their message... well, lots of people complain about bands writing useless lyrics about stupid messages, don't whine that you don't like Muse's view on the world. At least it's meaningful and gets people thinking.

I like Muse, but this song isn't great imo.

I don't care if it's a ripoff, I don't like it anyway.

What the hell are you on about? Eurasia isn't from 1984, it's a proper term.

I think the band is referencing it because of its influence in the book. I don't think it s a song about geography.

Yea, definitely ripping it off, cause the term isn't common and known today. And even if it wasn't, then certainly the band wouldn't be paying homage to the book, no, it's gotta be stealing a common word from a famous book. Totally right, my dude

Muse have always experimented with their music. People only compare it to Queen due to 3 guitar chords. If you've listened to Muse and to gotten to know their music you know they don't steal styles. They are who they are.

Good song.

I'm not an avid listener of Muse, and I enjoyed the song.

It's certainly not a Queen ripoff--it's unique enough of a song to stand its own, though there are definite influences.

"And must we do as we're tooooooooold!"

I liked that song.

I kept up with the whole "treasure hunt" in the site, listening to every single new bit they released from the song, all the ending drama (when the girl didn't want to activate the last piece), the radio broadcast from Zane Lowe... I think it was worth it. Sure, United States of Eurasia sounds like Queen (reminds me a lot of Bohemian Rhapsody, actually), but it's no rip-off. It isn't my favourite song from them, though. I'd still rather stuff like "Plug In, Baby", "Hysteria" and "Map Of The Problematique", but it's still enjoyable.

What was pretty interesting in that song was the ending, "Collateral Damage". It's a Chopin piece (this one), and it was pretty well interpreted by Matthew Bellamy. The children screaming and the airplane in the ending made it a little more dramatic, IMO.

Also, there's a bit of the new single (Uprising) available here, which was also played on Zane Lowe's broadcast. It's different from USoE, especially with that "space-ish" intro. Well, it's only a little bit of the song, so we can't take early conclusions.

I'm anxious for this album. It will only come out September 14th (I think), and they'll do a performance at the VMAs with Uprising, probably. So there's still a lot of time left until the album comes out. They will probably do another thing in their site, considering they are a bit crazy. =P

For the most part, it just sounded like Muse to me. There were a few short segments that reminded me of Queen, but if you want to hear something that "sounds like" Queen, go listen to Mika. He has a song called Grace Kelly which is obviously meant to sound like Queen, and he did a pretty good job of accomplishing that.

Once again, I wholly agree with subpar.

And I think Gagsy.

Everyone takes from other bands, whether it's samples, covers, styles, or whatnot.

The end is lovely, though.

Oh I know that. Nothing is ever truly original anymore it seems. They borrow sounds a lot, but there are people going around saying basically that Muse have stolen from Queen and not realising how much Muse do play around with their music. Just very frustrating as a long time Muse fan.

Hollywood is a better example of this phenomenon. A very large proportion of the movies released over the past few years are just remakes of older movies, film adaptations of cartoons, film adaptations of video games, and bad sequels of what used to be good movies. Furthermore, most of the "original" movies are just bad to begin with.

Obviously as a Muse fan I'm biased, and I agree that there are stronger Queen influences in this track than most, but they use a range of styles and sounds, and take influences from a lot of places, so I don't see why it matters. If you want to pay tribute to one of the most successful and lastingly popular bands of the last 30 years then why not?

Personally this track will need to grow on me, but then there have been Muse tracks before that I have been iffy about on release and then grown to love. As it is I love the classical ending, reminds me a lot of the classical segment in Butterflies and Hurricanes. There aren't too many rock pianists that are as embracing of their classical upbringing as Matt Bellamy.

Holy crap, those 40 seconds sounded really awesome. I remember that Matt was talking about doing a space-solo kind of thing, maybe it'll be in this song? Ah well, I just know I really can't wait for this album to come out

Total rip-off of Queen. And terrible rip-off of Queen, at that.

The constant repetition of the lines got really annoying.
