I remember reading some time ago that the name "Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo" was registered by Rockstar just before San Andreas was announced for real. That's not really a sign though if it's true, because I also heard they registered "Grand Theft Auto: Bogota". If either of those stories are true, they just sound like myth bait to me. A little while ago, there was a thread in the video games forum that linked to this article, which mentions Beijing as a different Asian alternative. I can see Japan working better than China as GTA material though now that I think of it.

I'd be honestly surprised if they did a non-American one again. The culture just works with the ideas and jokes they try to put across. With Japan... the series has had Japanese characters before, but they only really played a vital role in III, and they seem to have almost ditched the mainstream continuity of the last generation's games for IV. It'd be pretty fun having the Yakuza focus... it would be different, but I'm not sure if they'll be going for difference, hmm. Going off the way the Yakuza operate in lore and in reality, perhaps there'd be an emphasis on honour or something. The city would have to be decently sized too, putting into account how urban the Tokaido (sp?) belt really is.

I haven't checked the latest developments on the front of GTA SEQUEL WOW news, but I'm going ot stick with the American focus.

Lets have a GTA set on mars.

And yes, Nihon and Nippon are both ways to read the characters that make up the word for Japan in Japanese.

Why would you want a nip GTA?

Everyone would just look the same, and you wouldn't be able to tell who's who.

I'm not posting Japanese, and sense It's a proper noun, It's Nihon,

It would be fucking stupid if it took place in Japan. All the radio stations would be in Japanese, and all the characters would speak Japanese.

A Yakuza theme would be cool, but it wont take place outside of America.

first off there is a game that is about the yakuza and it is made by sega and they are working on the third sequel..even though it doesnt involve stealing cars it has everythings that gta has to offer.
